Garibaldi Hair System & DS 4.7 o_O;

Hi there folks ^_^

I was working on a kitty cat holiday card when I got all distracted by my shiny new purchase of Carrara :cheese:

When I returned to DS to finish the card, looks like I had let the DIM automatically update to 4.7.

4.7 is GREAT! ^_^ Some Really nice improvements.

But... The renderer is choking on the Garibaldi hair I had previously made for my 4.6 scene. I can't get any renders out of the old hair at all. The renderer (3Dlight) just can't get out of the Optimization phase.

So, to begin with... Logically... I should probably uninstall, then reinstall, the Garibaldi Hair plugin?

The issue right now is I can't locate it in my list of installed items in the DIM, and I have forgotten whether I installed it manually or not in the beginning. So...

Where would Garibaldi generally be installed to, and how do I uninstall it?

Thank you in advance, kind friends, for your continued help :-)

    I doubt if uninstalling the plug-in will help - choking on optimising images usually indicates a Temp folder issue, C:\Users\YOU\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D\Studio4\temp. Try clearing any files out of there, with DS closed, and then try rendering again.

    Thanks, Richard ^_^ I am still trying to locate the file; my setup is rather unorthodox :red:

    Meanwhile I did at least figure out that Garibaldi is a .dll file on the C: drive. ^^;

    I wonder why the temp file issue would flare up now, right after an upgrade?

    Garibaldi installs exactly 2 files - garibaldiPlugin.dll in the Plugin subfolder and garibaldiShader.sdl in the Shader subfolder. These folders will be located under the folder where you have installed DazStudio.exe.

    Anywhere else is not correct and will not be seen by DS.

    If you have an "unorthodox" installation, are you sure the DIM installed 4.7 in the correct place for your setup?

    Believe it or not, I just can't find this file. o_O; It's not showing up on any searches, and I can't locate it by trying to follow the path. Specifically, I can't seem to find 'appdata.'

    Yesterday I used an aggressive file cleaner to declutter my OS drive. Cleanup.bat. I remember telling it to get rid of the .temp files. I wonder if it knocked out the whole folder!

    I think I will try uninstalling and reinstalling DS. Maybe that will replace any missing parts ^^;

    Thanks for trying to help! :)

    Hi Gone ^_^

    I was just thinking the same thing. I am about to try reinstalling DS. Thanks! :)

    [Edit: I finally got it uninstalled after crashing the DIM several times, then double checked the DIM install path, and reinstalled. DS 4.7 is working but now the Garibaldi plugin has completely vanished from the list of installed plugins! Next I'll try and reinstall That] ^^;

    Now it's getting Quite interesting! o_O;

    I uninstalled DS. Made sure the DIM had the standard application path (C drive) and had the DIM reinstall it.

    DS is working great, including Smart Content. It's right where I want it. But even though Garibaldi Hair was showing up in the list of installed plugins, it was Not working. The hair I'd made was still listed in the Scene tree, but did not appear on the models when I clicked on it.

    I ran Glary Utilities to find and uninstall the Garibaldi plugin, which it did. I rebooted the computer afterwards so hopefully everything updated.

    I checked my Product Library and didn't find any new versions of the Garibaldi installer, so I searched my downloads, found the original 64 bit installer, and installed it manually, as I must have done the first time.

    Upon loading DS and checking the list of installed plugins, it is Not listed in there although it was installed.

    What next...?? I really don't want to go back to DS 4.6, but my cats need hair! And even though Carrara makes absolutely Beautiful hair, it will not import certain morphs and deformers I need for my kittens. Without Garibaldi, I will either have to paint on the hair (not so hard to do, but time consuming) or else make all-new kittens in Carrara (again, not hard to do, but time consuming.)

    If only Everyone's problems were so small... :-P

    When you say you installed manually, where did you point the installer to?

    It must be pointed to the folder where the dazstudio.exe file is contained and not at the content folder. Alternatively, you can point it to a temp directory and then manually move the files to the proper location.

    Hi again, Gone :)

    Yes, that is where I was pointing it.

    It gets better ^_^ I just uninstalled both DS 4.7 and Garibaldi Again (!), rebooted, and started digging around in my backups. I came up with a version of DS 4.6, installed that to the default C: path, reinstalled Garibaldi to that directory, and Boom--! Instantly, no problems, We Have Hair :-)

    This is the exact same setup routine I just unsuccessfully used Twice with 4.7, so I can't Help but wonder if there is a bug in there re: Garibaldi.

    Earlier, when I said I had a rather unorthodox setup: I had previously blown up my Walmart Special, so I moved its old drive (700 GB) to my brand new $1 Surplus Special using it as F:, my library drive ^_^;; By doing that I totally messed up the DIM's tally of what was installed where, after I'd gotten it and DS installed to the new machine's C: drive. I have only recently gotten it sorted out... I Did just install Carrara to F: rather than C: due to C: only having 80 GBs, 85% used... :P So far that seems to be working OK...

    So for now, after banging my head on the keyboard most of the day, the problem is solved...! But as much as I want to use it, I think I will hold off reinstalling the DS 4.7 until I hear whether anyone else had a problem with the Garibaldi Hair plugin. I do a lot of animals and until I "migrate" them all to Carrara I do need Garibaldi working... :lol:

    Glad you got it working again but I'm at a loss as to why you had this problem in the first place.

    My own set up is sufficiently off book that I can't use DIM to upgrade - I have to use the .exe installer. I've never had a problem with Garibaldi failing to work properly with each upgrade including 4.7.

    That's reassuring ^_^ Which OS are you using? Mine is Win 7 Pro 64 bit.

    Wow! So nice to know this software will work on older systems... I never do know where the next computer will come from... Surplus sales are great! ^_^

    Most likely I will wait until my kitty card is done to my satisfaction, and then I will make a good backup of my computer's current state and try installing 4.7 again. But this time I will install it by hand and not use the DIM. Maybe that will make the difference! :)

    (UPDATE: This morning I was having some file saving issues, so I set a restore point and then, out of sheer laziness, let the DIM reinstall DS 4.7 for at least the 3rd time. Imagine my delight when Garibaldi came up working perfectly this time! :cheese: I have no idea what I did or did not do, but it's all working Great!!! :) )
