What is an overlay?

What is an overlay? I have searched the DAS documentation and have not found a description of what is meant by an overlay. I have recently purchased Fun with Yan. In its product description they referred to making an overlay by creating a copy of the object. Is there something special that needs to be done for an overlay?

Could you give us a little more information? Did you mean DAZ documentation and by that DAZ Studio (as DAZ is the name of the company)? What is Fun with Yan? Does it cover working with DAZ Studio? Photoshop? The more information you can give us, the better.
My bad
DAZ Studio 4.7 is the software. No information on overlays in DAZ Studio help.
" Fun With Yarn – Classic Crochet" which is a Shadier Presets for use in DAZ Studio.
I think by overlays they mean the effect of having clothing with a layer of lace on top of another fabric.
Simple way of explaining it is like layers in say photoshop.
An overlay can add for example freckles to a skin texture for a character or body art things like that while keeping the original texture intact.
I think with the Fun with Yarn you would need to add another copy of the item over the original one and then add the overlay texture to it or part of it.
One of the promos for Fun With Yarn – Classic Crochet gives a quick set of instructions on how to use overlays with the product.
I would think the easiest way to use them as overlays would be using the LIE (Layered Image Editor). but I could be wrong.
This isn't an official term, so it isn't ion the manual - overlay can mean laying one texture on top of another, with the layered image editor as Chohole suggests, or in Shader Mixer by combining two materials, or in a stand alone image editor and then loading the combined image, or it can mean using a second copy of the item in the scene (or, more efficiently, a Geometry Shell from the Create menu) as Wilmap and the product creator suggest for this set, applying the crochet materials to the outer mesh.
I believe that wilmap is right
