Graphics Card Suggestion? System Struggling.

Hi everyone!

I have been using Daz Studio for a few Months now.

I have made one of my characters and wanted to make more.

But my Computer really struggles with rendering, or when I add a lot of lights.

I have a good system, so i am thinking its my graphics card?

Any suggestions on how to make performance a little better? My computer also struggles when i use Sculptris or other 3D modeling programs.

Thanks!

DAZ Studio's 3Delight engine uses the CPU for rendering. It's going to slow down when lots of lights are added. Most programs will. (AoA's Advanced lights are faster than default ones when you need a lot in a scene, and I do recommend them.)

Your problem is more likely that you appear to only have 8 gb (???) of RAM. Lack of RAM doesn't really affect rendering, but it will result in big scenes really lagging in the viewport when you're working on them, and other system slowdowns when you have many things open. My computer is nowhere near as nice as yours (at least until all the parts for my new one arrive), and my graphics card is even older (it's a GTX 560), but I use 16gb all of the time and I have little to no lag.

Ohhh I see. I always thought i had plenty or ram. Who would have thought 8 Gigs of ram would be too little.

Im on the fence about upgrading my computer or getting a new one. I wish i had known i would get into 3D modeling back when i bought this PC.

I have the same system apart from having a GT610, same processor and ram. I don't find it a struggle at all and I use a lot of advanced lighting and surfaces. I suppose I see it differently as I was using a Dual core, 2 GB of Ram system for so long. But it really does depend on how big the scene is, raytraced functions and render settings. What I did notice was that when I moved all of my programs to a second internal drive and kept the main HDD (/C:) for the OS (win7) my system became much more responsive. Both drive are 1TB in size and just having the OS on a drive on it's own left a lot of free space so effectively making the drive faster.

most of us got into modeling because we bought powerful systems to render and asked what else could we do. I don't think anyone buys a high end system and then says "Now I'll get into 3D modeling!" but when you replace that system you have now you'll know a little more about what you want to replace it with.
8GB RAN is plenty if your computer is being used for MS Office or Web or FarCry 4, and you can get away with that if you are using Adobe Creative for web production but these days 8GB RAM is the baseline for a 2D professional or a 3D hobbyist.. My production needs generally top out at about 10 - 11 GB RAM (which is Studio, Blender, Photoshop and Reality up and running at any given moment) and I have 12 GB RAM total, I assembled it 5 years ago and won't upgrade the RAM until I'm ready to build an entirely new system RAM is only cheap or newer systems right now, older systems it's still top dollar which is perhaps the incentive to get you to buy a whole new system.
If your system is slow to navigate screen rotation, redraws, graphics clarity thats you GPU card. If its slow rendering its your CPU but it could also be compounded by having 8GB RAM and when that pool gets full your system is looking at the HD to store info and even with a top of the line SSD 6GB/s RAID Array to offset that it would be shockingly slow in comparison to RAM.

Thanks for all the advice everyone!

StratDragon thanks for breaking down what issues cause what.

I do not have issue roateing the models ect.

The problem arises when I add preset lightings that have many lights, its cripples the program! I just have to close it. with just a few lights it does fine.

The time that it really struggles is rendering, even on low settings I use for previewing. The fans go 100 miles an hour and sound like a plane taking off! My co-worker in the next office even came over when i first rendered something and said "What was that!?" it was so loud!

I am wandering if its my cooling that is no good, the fans always hum, constantly even when im idle with nothing running.

My CPU is already 3.4 ghz... i mean how much higher can you go? Overclocking a really high end CPU to 4.0? uhh doesnt sound that good.

Also I am going to buy a new PC now, I am going to give this PC to a friend (their laptop bit the dust recently) so now up for suggestions for a new PC!

The tricky part is i want something mobile, so i can take it to and from work daily. Ehhh I just can't have it all I guess! lol

It does sound like there's something wrong with the cooling. Do the usual dust and fan check, all the fans!
The thing should be nearly silent on idle.

Don't be scared of overclocking, everything is designed to overclock these days, though overclocking without extra cooling is not recommended.

Your i7-3770 already has a turbo mode up to 3.9GHz!

I just took it in to have it cleaned and checked because of the fans always running. It did not seem to help =(

post your display setting from Studio.

Display settings? What exactly do you mean?

There was a similar problem posted on the forums a few months ago.
The problem turned out to be the Thermal Paste between the chip and the heatsink had dried out and was no longer conducting efficiently.
Were the temps. measured and/or the heatsink reseated?

I need to check that on my rig, I'm having odd issues with speed right now and cant find a software reason.

I will have to pull out the report and see what it says. I think I am going to take it back in and fuss at them.

There is an awesome freeware program called Speccy. Search for it, download it, and run a system scan. It actually analyzes everything down to the temperature of your processors, how fast each chip of RAM is, and a lot of other cool stuff. I love the prog as it really gives a good indication of what is where and how its working. :)

EDIT: Ok i got Speccy, what exactly am i looking for? Nothing seems to be running hot or anything.

I am thinking of getting this Laptop for taking to and from work.

I think you could get a much more powerful desktop for less but if you want to be portable it's a good system. I would defiantly add an external LCD to the mix, 17" screen is going to get crowded with pallets and content and viewports.
the CPU is the bottleneck on that system, 2.5GHz is 0.1 GHz faster than my five year old i7 920,

It's a good thing if things aren't running hot...:)

Trust me...I've been there when a laptop was running hot...not pretty....

What temps. and fan speeds do you get, at idle and at max. load?

The temp at load should be steady somewhere around 67C for a 3770 and mid thirties when idle.

OpenHardwareMonitor may give you more detailed temperature/fan info.
