ambient seems not the same as the poser ambient.

feeling totally lost.

how do i make a material light even with no lights in the scene?

what does the any shape light do?

how do i remove the multi channel from the shader after i accidentally start one?

thanks!!

One technique I use a lot is to copy (right click - copy) the "Texture" map in the "Color" channel, into the "Glow" channel's "Texture Map" (right click - paste). (See attached screenshot). You can then adjust the amount of glow using the "Brightness" slider in the "Glow" channel.

I use one of two different methods:

    #1: Glow Channel
Put a color multiplied by some high #(500 is my usual starting point and I'll go up from there depending on test renders)
If you have Indirect Light turned on in the render settings this will both cause the object to glow and to give off light

    #2:
Add an Anything Glows light to the object
You have to parent the Anything Glows to the light (not sure if that's actually necessary, but I always do it)
You have to enter the exact name of the object you want to give off light in the Item box on the properties of the Anything Glows
This will make the object give off light, but NOT glow

    Attached images:
    Setup of glow channel
    Setup of anything glows
Test render - the ball on the left has Anything Glows and is casting red light, the ball on the right has a bright blue in the glow channel

EDIT TO ADD: Steve K and Wendy Loves Cats said exactly this, but much more quickly, while I was making screenshots. ;)

I should add that I think using the glow channel to cast light is more realistic looking, it is also a lot slower. If you want the glowing object to look like it is glowing with the Anything Glows you can put just a color or texture in the Glow channel of its shader and it will not cast light but will look like it is glowing.

    Answered above. :)

If you mean the Anything Glows light - answered above. :)
If you mean the Shape Light, it's just a regular light with three different options for how it is shaped (ring, ellipse, rectangle) - see attached renders.

You can change the type of the shader through the drop-down on the "Top Shader" layer.
