So I had already made some Characters and saved them in files.

But i hadn't gotten a good shape.
Today i was working on figureing out a nice shape of a character and i finally did. Saved that to a file.

I want all the old saved characters to have that shape. So how do i record the shape of my new figure somehow and apply it to the old characters i saved?

Try reading through this documentation: http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/userguide/creating_content/packaging/tutorials/saving_morphs/start

More than likely you are using dials and will be saving those. Remember, this would need to be only for personal use. It is more complicated to save if you want to do something that is distributable and legal.

What's the differentce between Saving as Character preset and savivng as Shape preset? I tried Shape and it worked, i think.

A Shape preset stores just the shape, a Character preset stores shape and materials. Also, a Character preset will load the figure if you double-click it without having the figure selected but a Shape preset won't.
