Does anyone have or know of a good Sci-Fi Force dome?

Hi, I"m looking for a decent Mostly Transparent Sci-Fi Force dome suitable for protecting a entire town. I'm sure if I had to, I could possibly make one, but was just wondering if there were any floating about.

Thank you.

You mean something like this? I created a sphere primitive and dialed the opacity down to somewhere around 18% Then I played around with the size to get what I wanted. This was more-or-less a proof of concept, so I've only got about an hour in the whole image.

    Hello namffuak

    Looking great !!!!!!!

How would a soccer ball style pattern shader superimposed onto the transparency look ?

( Idea I had in mind would be that the white would be opacity 18% transparent while the black/grey pattern
would have a bit of depth/volume to it - act as docking/defense/scientific areas etc for your spaceships/colony.
What way was your concept heading towards ? )

EDIT : Just read some of the Carrara forums, another concept to consider:-

I'm not sure what would result - like I said, this was just playing around to see what it would look like. Basically, I had just finished re-reading James Blish's "Cities in Flight" novels and wanted to see if I could come up with a visual representation of a Spindizzy field. I think it matches the description in the stories, so I quit while I was ahead. :-) I'm not sure where I'm going to go with this, but I'll probably play with the concept some more.

(Edit: Moved to The Commons as it not the offer of a freebie.)

This is a shield concept I used some time ago in an early sci-fi render. The texture is my own. I wanted to create a shield which looked like it was comprised of smaller individual shields and went with a hexagonal approach as it reminded me of some old-school movies.

The dome itself is just a sphere primitive with the lower half cut off through the polygon editing tool and with subdivision applies to round it off a bit better. The city is the Dystopia City Blocks for demonstration purposes. I used a vertical tiling of 10 and a horizontal tiling of 30 to get the shield effect, which helps overcome some of the primitives texture limitations.

The only caveat to this method is if you're looking from a downward angle as the very apex of the sphere gets distorted in unpleasant ways where the polygons meet. I'm happy to share my textures if you'd like to create something similar or if you want to modify them for your own use.

The other image below is the original render for which the textures were created.

Thank you all for your help. I know this is a simple thing to create, but I'm still very new to Daz, Hex, Ren'py, Python, and just plain old world building, that I'm feeling pulled in 20 directions at once, and am starting to feel overwhelmed (but this is usually when I do my best work). I tried to build a simple gold ring yesterday from a toroid primitive. I succeeded, mostly, the color still isn't right. but I was able to make it, parent it, and fit it to genesis model, and now have a ring that works on the left hand of genesis characters. but it took me most of the day to figure out. so while I'm sure I could make a shield dome, if someone had one, it simply you make my life slightly easier.

HeraldOfFire: I think that is almost what I'm looking for. The basic concept I'm working on is a shipwreck colony on a planet. Ships wreck periodically, and the colony salvages the wreck site for materials, so they need to be close enough to the site to get to it quickly. The shield protects them from the impacts, and from dangerous wild things on the planet. But they don't have access to high tech, except from salvage, so things break down. A periodic segment failure allowing bad things in is kind of part of the plan.

so yeah, I'd be interested in the gizmos you used to make that shield.

Okay, here you go. They're offered unconditionally so feel free to alter them to your hearts content and use them for whatever you need.

There are three images. One is the diffuse (deep blue). One is the opacity map (grey). And one Normal map (blue and red). Plug them into the diffuse, opacity and normal channels in the surfaces tab.

Stumbling around with your force field idea for a character in Iray but I am no expert in this field so it apears I need to do more but I am unsure what?

    1) Basicly created a sphere (default settings)

    2) Uber Base Shader

    3) Increased Diffuse & Oacity weight so as to add apropriate images.

    4) added Normal Image

    5) Hit render

    Currently run out of clue.

Thanks in advance for any advise;)

McGyver has some free domes at ShareCG. I don't think I can leave a link here, but if you search him in the forum, his ShareCG link is attatched to his posts! smiley

He did make an early post in this thread: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/668646/i-said-i-wouldn-t-but#latest

Eeeew... I wouldn't use that McGyver guy's stuff... He's a jerk... oh wait, that's me... nevermind... well, actually I am kinda obnoxious, so point well made... wait... I said that point... it's kinda suspicious that I'm agreeing with me.

depends on how the "force field " is supposed to work

given no such thing exists and is never fully explained

it could be an electrified structure, a repelling pulse, many old cheesy movies  apparently just use a double exposed glass bowl over the model of the encampment and scratch the film where the little alien missiles make contact by the looks of their special FX cheeky this thing is supposed to spring into existance at a push of a button or flick of a switch.

I always think forcefields are a bit of an deus ex machina cop out myself

this looks like you added the normal map into the base shader. also there is the option to tile the textures further donw in the surfaces tab, depending on the size of yur model and how big or small the pattern is supposed to be you might need to experiment a bit with the tiling
