Older .daz files crashing in Studio 4.7, any obvious thoughts or solutions?

solarviewsolarview Posts: 272

Hi All,
I'm running Studio 4.7 on a Mac (10.10). I have some older .daz files that are crashing Studio.
When I try to open these saved older ".daz" files, the files will proceed to open like normal, but then at around 99% complete, it crashes Studio 4.7.
FYI, the .daz files have a "black file icon" in my finder windows, where as ".duf files" have "blue icons".
The older ".duf files" open fine.

Is there a fix for this? Or a work around?

Thanks.

- Sol

What kind of content is in this scene -- triax figures like Genesis, older figures like V4, clothed or unclothed?

The black icon is the default icon for .daz files.

    Hey Mike,
In this particular scene it's two Genesis females-nude with hair only. Simple starter figures. I believe It's the V4 characters Dawn and Abby in this one. I'm thinking it might be something with the hair.
In moving up to 4.7, I did some house-cleaning and may have misplaced something comparatively to the old install location. Each character has different hair-style add-ons, so I'm thinking that might be the culprit. I can't tell anything from the log file, but in watching it try to boot before it crashes, I see that there were a couple of items "missing". Might just have to lose those and start fresh.
Unless you have an obvious "check this" that I likely missed. :-)

    Thanks.

You can check the log file for details on the missing items, but I wouldn't expect that cause a crash, just a failure to load.

I seem to recall problems loading some .daz files created in 4.0 in later versions -- in my case scenes with Genesis with no conforming items worked, as did scenes with pre-Genesis figures, but those with Genesis with clothing or hair failed. I'm not sure if that was the case for others, though.

I know some older .daz files could do this, any idea which version of DAZ Studio they were created with?

They would have been version 4, but no later than 4.5.

Is there a fix for this?
As of now can't even open the files, to turn off or eliminate the morphs, or hair that might be the issue.
I can start fresh with new characters, but I tend to modify my DAZ and Renderosity Characters to make them somewhat original to my scenes. So I will lose those mods. Hoping to save them if I can.

To your point here, I've had other files that I had moved that showed a missing element that had I needed to locate, but they didn't cause Studio to crash. Even with a missing element of two they would open, and you would see the element obviously missing in the character or scene. That's why I was wondering if it were maybe a known bug, and that there might be a fix for it.

Hey, does anyone know what these are? (screenshot)
I'm seeing these missing from from a few files. I can see my Genesis shape adjustment sliders available, so i assume they have nothing to do with those. I tried to uninstall and reinstall my Victoria V2 Morphs, thinking that might be the source, but no change. Still missing.
I am using the Install Manager for all my DAZ content now, and manually installing my Renderosity content to their own folder. I have those files linked-to in my Content Directory Manager.
Anyone recognize these and/or maybe have a suggestion?

    Thanks.

Those are adamr001's free Proportions morphs for Genesis, available here: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/5484/

can you make a new Administrative account, boot to that account and try the same thing?
    Alternatively you can DL 10.10.2.

If you file a bug report with DAZ and you're willing to attach one of the .daz files that causes a crash (assuming one is small enough), they can probably fix the bug and you'll be able open the scenes in the next release.

Hey, I have the same problem in Win 7: .daz files that worked in Studio 4.6 cannot be opened in 4.7.

I think the problem is a fault in the code of 4.7, a null pointer or something, because your crash reports this:

    Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000000000000

    and my log reports this:

Error setting pointers while reading file E:/OldSys/I/OldSettings/luke/Documenti/Poser/as_09.daz : C Exception: Memory Access Violation - Attempted to read memory at address 0x00000000

I'm not a software engineer, but I think that trying to read memory address 0x0 has something to do with a bad pointer, which in turn should depend on a bug in the software. My two cents.
