how to verify the direction of normal?

Click the Interactive Renderer (up arrow within a circle) icon at the top of the main viewport in either the Assembly Room or Vertex Modeler and when the control panel opens, look towards the bottom for the option to display normals.

Your question about the normal was answered. I believer there is a hexagon tutorial on Gordon's surface.

Getting the profiles and polylines in the right places is important as you can see the ribbing of the aircraft has different sizes and shapes of profiles.

Used to be a good tutorial for Carrara 7 on VTC that included making an aircraft using Gordon surfaces.

The spline modeler has the same sort of concept working with extrusion and profiles in splines.

To re-size the grid, in the VM and the Assembly Room look under the View menu.

The VM and the Assembly room are a bit different in how they look, but it is essentially the same process. Just change the values to your liking.
