Cannot duplicate objects or groups -

This is probably something so simple, but I've not found a fix.

The edit menu has greyed out commands and the key commands do not work either.

I have found how to duplicate groups and objects in a dozen places, but cannot find duplicate does not work

Are you trying to do this on purchased content? I think you're not allowed to duplicate that. I assume it's some violation of the agreement or something.

By default we can't duplicate certain 'trees' of stuff, but Fenric has a plugin that will unlock that feature. It's this one:

    http://www.daz3d.com/posing-pack-3

assuming that's what you're running into, but 99% of things should be duplicatable already.

    Ok...

The character is the basic female genesis..
The hair is in the basic daz stuff
The dress is in the PC+1.99 stuff

That is how far I have narrowed it down.

It would not make sense for Carrara or daz3D to play copyright police.
If that is so, then we should be warned in the sales information.
Yet, I do recall I agreed to something. I will check that out.

I will go back into Carrara and rebuild the character. So far, I have narrowed down to a character and few items associated with the character.

It could be a corrupted Carrara install.

No if it's a character, it's probably that tree function that for unknown reasons Carrara has the duplicate function disabled on. It's a very odd restriction for Daz to set, doesn't make much sense, but the Fenric plugin can defeat it.

This restriction goes in the book as one of the dumbest, right next to the restriction on not being able to make morphs on objects which don't already have them....

Still haven't figured that one out...

Yes, rigged figures can't be duplicated- even Carrara rigged figures can't be duplicated. As Jon mentioned above, there is a plugin by Fenric that adds the functionality.

Fenric's plugins are very affordable, but a way to do it on the cheap, is to stick the grouped figure in a replicator and select the create real instances option. I would be careful and only use it with a couple replications instead of the default 100 or so.

You can see what I loaded and view the drop down. The duplicate is greyed out in edit menu.

I have only loaded one character object, nothing else.

    Ctrl + D doesn't work either.

Yes, I can do the replicate on the character.

Got a link or domain pointer to the Fenric thing?

I am curious...should I be aware of more of this type of thing?

Are there other little tweak applications I should be considering?

    This is hilarious!

I can't duplicate a rigged character, but I can replicate a 20x20 matrix of them.

I can also add clothes, hair, expressions...group and replicate the group in a 20x20 or higher matrix.

What do you think of this? Is this a bug, or is there some purpose?

A duplicate object is an instance of a master object in Carrara. I'm guessing to avoid conflicts with mesh bone influences in rigged objects, Carrara purposely greys out some commands like Duplicate.

You can drag any rigged object/figure to the Browser and back in scene to duplicate it. A type of export/import. Fenrics plug-in is similar to this, but is better optimized(iirc).

If you use the replicator method to create a real instance of a Poser imported figure(like V4.2), note that it might remove features like conforming clothing(etc).

Strictly speaking, the plugin does the same thing as if you dragged the stuff to the browser and back again.

    But
    - It's a menu option, so you can put a shortcut on it
    - It is a LOT faster
    - It doesn't leave a temporary thing in your browser

The thing with replicated models is that there is only one instance of that model.

Putting aside the rigged model for a moment, from the screen shot you've posted of the menu, even if the group contained no rigged figures, it would still be grayed out because you have no group or object selected. To duplicate, the object or group to be duplicated needs to be selected.
