Is there a quicker way to render

About an hour ago I hit the render button for a scene with about 600 frames. It is still working on frame zero. At this rate it looks like its going to take forever to do my whole movie. What's the trick, get a second PC just for renders? or is there some fancy software that will speed things up?
Suggestions would be welcome.

If it was me, I would render ONE frame first to see how long it would take, then multiply that by 600 to let me know the render length time.

Is this 3Delight? Is it still optimising images? Is it a very large scene? What lighting are you using? Is there a lot of Hair in your scene (transparencies)?

Are you rendering to an Image Series or a Movie?

There is no magic way to lessen render time, apart form using one of the OpenGL options which are much faster, but less quality. A better processor would help, one with multiple cores since 3Delight uses the CPU only, so an i7 chip with 4 cores gives you 8 threads, and would be a lot faster than Dual core CPU.

You could always use an internet Render Farm, I don't think they are wildly expensive, but they can be very quick, may be worth googling?

Thanks JimmyC I've hacked out a whole lot of stuff that isn't needed and drastically reduced the size of the scene. This has greatly improved the render time I'm going to bed now and the job will be done before breakfast..
