I have been watching for a genesis sale and here it is today.

My interest is to use genesis characters, but I'm interested to basically create unique (not published) type characters for my project.

Currently I have only the genesis content items that are included with the original Daz3d and Carrara 8.6 pro. I would really like to improve on the Genesis characters and things you can do with them.

This posting is to hear from other users about items they consider important plugins or content items for using Genesis.
There appear to be a number of body and facial morph tools. It would nice to know of some best choices.
It may be a good idea as well to acquire a few more complete genesis characters as well.

I would appreciate to read any recommendations..

If you're looking to create unique characters via spinning parameter dials, then it's best to give yourself a larger scope of parameter dials to choose from. If you don't have them, I would say the genesis evolution body and head morphs are a must, at a minimum:

    http://www.daz3d.com/genesis-evolution-body-morphs

and depending on the type of characters you might want the muscularity morphs:

Zev0 has a lot of morph add ons for Genesis that might be of interest

Then there are also the iconic figures/characters released for Genesis, which again are more than just adding an extra character archetype but also will add parameter dials you can use to create unique characters of your own too:

Hopefully this will give a start and be helpful. I'm pondering the Genesis sale myself and what to pick up as well.

If you are planning for a lot of unique elements, you may also be interested in the following thread. It is a Daz Studio thread, and often refers to other programs, but the same concepts apply to use of Genesis with Carrara.

I looked at the Zevo items duing the recent Zevo sale. I didn't buy any, because I was really waiting for a more focused Genesis sale.
This way I could buy more necessary items. .

I realize body and facial morphs are probably the best first step.
Maybe I should have been more limiting, i.e., I am thinking to buy about 10 content items in the sale.

The project I am currently working is for a not-profit so passing on my costs may not include enough for all I need.
Even though I charge nothing for my work and often I end up paying for most of the content items. I am not complaining, because I can generally find another use for the content. That is, if I don't buy specialty items.

I am still not very familiar with Daz studio, since most of my efforts in the past two months have been to learn Carrara.

The genesis may not be that agreeable with other Daz3d application users. My purpose for coming to Daz is to have more characters, more tools for working with iclone. I am not disappointed., Reallusion just released a fix fo rusing Genesis 2 characters. I will forego the G2 for awhile, because the Genesis is mostly trouble free for export into iclone.

I am very interested to read from experienced users that recommend content items. I have been a Sony Vegas Pro user for several years, and I am thinking to read from users like myself.
I have strong ideas about some Sony Vegas plugins and their value. Some will do the job, and some others are extraordinary important plugins.

It is easy to buy stuff, but what is really important and extremely useful. It's not about filling a folder full of content items... I have that from iclone as I have bought so many things that I basically "regret". I was just hoping I could make better decisions this go around with Carrara and Daz content.

Those are excellent dustrider, I have a few of them already but I completely forgot about Thorne's stuff and those also seem like they would be very useful in making unique faces

To be honest I often find sales like this overwhelming. Too many possible items to try to sort through in a limited time, means I'll try to put together a list of things I want to purchase, than whittle it down to what I really want... then wait too long doing all of this, and when the sale invariably ends before I get my list down I end up missing it and buy nothing :)

Still, I'll have to try to beat the clock on this, lots of good stuff there...

You have this right. By the time I got back to the shop last night the prices had reverted back to regular prices.

I hate the marketing on this site. Constantly you are required to pay a certain price for items you don't need to buy something else you might need for a better price. I don't have time to sort out their crossword puzzle marketing. If new content won't stand on it;'s own...maybe it should not be offered in the shop.

I don't even click on a sale, if I see a buy this to get this bit. There are too many items in the shop...looking through choices is very time consuming and a complete waste of time.

If I went to Amazon.com or other online store and had to buy this to buy that bit... I among other millions would just hit the X in the upper right corner. Who wants to hunt and buy something you don't need for something you do need.

The shop search also needs alot more search parameters to let users focus on what they are interested. Search on Genesis for example. You get all kinds of Genesis 2 content in the search as well. People are busy...I don't understand why you have to search and view everything in a catalog.

Maybe it is brother-in-law marketing. That is giving the marketing job to the brother-in-law...ignoring the fact the brother-in-law hates the shop owner and is doing his best to make the business fail..... LOL

I don't even participate in the 'buy 1 from category A, buy 2 from category z, stand on one foot and hop' bs sales. Or the punch card bs either.

Yesterday's Genesis1 sale was a refreshing straightforward sale. While it was too short timeframe wise, I could actually see and understand the discounts without breaking out a calculator and learning there is no real discount at all, just a lot of forced purchases (which is what most of the sales are like). Managed to snag about $100 worth of Genesis1 stuff, but as always it was down to the last minute before I had fully whittled my list down. This time I beat the clock, but other times I have not, so I certainly understand.

I agree, I have no idea who it is that comes up with these weird complicated bs 'sales' that daz seems to run currently, but it is poor marketing. I've bought waaaaay more content from Rendo, since I can at least understand their sales, and I just refuse to participate in any of daz's usual 'sale' nonsense.

It is nice to know I am not the only one that has issues with the sales.

Now we have a pre-march madness mess. Madness is right, and it's from the marketing side.

I don't expect to convince are encourage Daz to alter their marketing.

If is common practice where a company gets a mindset and they embrace it to bankruptcy.

The way I approach it is, if I miss the sale, well, there'll be another one along soon. Daz sales are like buses - frequent, so there's much less incentive to rush in, IMHO. (another of my hobbies, there's one sale a year and it lasts a week, and it's "only" 30% off. But if you miss it, it's gone for another year.)

I see the two new G2 characters have an offer - buy both pro packs at $66 each and get 10% off other March madness stuff. Well by the time I've spent $130 (which I can't afford) on them, there's certainly no chance of affording anything else! And even though I could use some decent Afro-Caribbean characters, I'm in no rush. They'll be on sale again in a few months!

Very true Tim, there's always another sale along soon. Used to be we would have periodic V4/M4 sales of huge discounts (like 80% off) every couple of months. And we still have them actually. But it's nice to see Genesis1 getting similar treatment, I think this is actually the 2nd Genesis1 sale I've seen in the past several months.

I feel a little sorry for those who only use Genesis2. I suspect there won't be big category sales for Genesis2 until such time as daz is promoting a Genesis 3 character :)

In many cases the M4/V4 stuff will niceley autofit to Genesis, and Genesis stuff will autofit to G2, so buying older things is rarely a waste. (at the end of the day, all you're buying is a mesh & shaders with some morphs and rigging...)

If you are prepared to work in DAZ3D there is also the GenX2 morph interchange:-
    http://www.daz3d.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=genx2 addon

    I often transfer Aiko 3, Hiro 3 morphs to both Genesis & Genesis 2F & 2M.
The old Gen 3 morphs look great with the G2 HD options applied.

The render shown here is an Aiko 3 morph taken into G2F:-

Another Dragon head type morph, excuse the leaves on the tree though (suffering from squareitis).
    Shows what can be done.

Are you interested in doing human variations or humanoid type creatures ?

There is lots that can be done with both approaches.

One more unless you request more....
