Content woes
It seems like this happens to me every time I try to get back into using DS. It's been a while since I've run updates, etc. I do so today (using the DAZ Installer). I open DS 4.7 and all my categories are gone. Again.
I have 1000s of content items (both DAZ sourced and 3rd party). The prospect of spending days (weeks) of time organizing the content (again) just turns me away from even trying.
Before the CMS, I used to just sort my runtime libraries into a structure that made sense to me. But that causes issues if you need to do upgrades with DAZ Installer; so I tried to be a "good DS user" and use the Content Library / Management tools. And I get burned.
It's not trivial to setup all those categories and log all the content so I can find it quickly. And searching for a piece of clothing that fits the image I want to make by browsing all the folders (in Poser and DS content libraries) ... No thanks.
It's frustrating to me that managing content libraries is still such a chore that it becomes too much of a hassle to even try.

Don't panic and manually try to recategorize everything just yet....
First, is the content manager running at all? If for some reason it didn't start or shut down, then you won't see any of your content or custom categories and you simply have to restart it or identify why it isn't running and fix that.
Second, in case it matters, what version of DS did you change from (really really old, or just something recent)
Third, in case it matters, are you using the new database, or the older Valentina database?
last, have you been regularly making backups of your content manager's database and your runtimes? If so, even if something went horribly wrong and damaged your database (although I'm guessing this isn't the case anyway), you should hopefully be able to simply restore it from your backup and not loose too much. If you have not been backing it up, after you get this resolved, now is the time to learn how.
Also remember you have to tell DAZ Studio what directory(ies) your content is located in, and also tell it to search those directories. So if you move/rename those directories, or reinstall your OS from scratch, or rolled back to a savepoint or something from earlier, DS will no longer know where they are and you'll have to tell it again.
Thanks for the replies, Sean. I should have mentioned at the get-go that I've been using DS since Victoria 4 was released; so although my name probably isn't recognizable these days (its been several years since I was an active member here on the forums), I'm not completely new at this. :) To answer your queries..
1. Yes, the DAZ CMS is running. I exited DS and restarted the service "just in case" before I got too frustrated with it. I also tried starting DS "As an Administrator" just to see if that would change anything.
2. I was running like 4.4 or 4.5 (I think); so I was a couple of .X releases back, but not ancient by any means.
3. Didn't really know there was a "new" database. :) I guess I'm just running whatever the DAZ Installer put on the system at the time.
4. My backup "system" is really designed around the idea that I'll lose a hard drive, not so much that I'll corrupt a file; so I don't have "point in time" backups to restore from.
Interestingly, the first few lines of my dblog.txt file are:
Then a very big ERROR message, which begins with...
