Iray render question.

Currently running a GTX 960 2GB. I'm treating myself to a little tax money fun, by getting a GTX 1660 Super 6GB. No more "Running out of Vram!" errors in certain game for me! Then I started wondering if I will notice any kind of performance increase with IRAY. Simple single character scences take roughly 2 to 5 minutes at 150 samples depending on how close the camera is to the character. Should I expect some, if any, improvement when my new GPU arrives?

6GB isn't a lot of VRAM, especially now that Iray forces GTX cards to emulate RTX features, which further eats into your VRAM. Have you been able to fit any scenes at all onto your 960?
No it isn't, it is the absolute minimum for DS 4.20 on W10 if one is doing Iray renders
I have 6GB and have very few problems.
As I said in the original post, it takes my 960 about 2 to 5 minutes to render a fully clothed character with hair, at 150 samples, depending on how close the camera is. I mainly bought the card to make my games run better, I just wanna know if I can expect any kind of performance boost in Iray too.
This one for instance uses the default Iray materials and default light setup, save for "Draw ground" being turned off: 3 minutes 41 seconds with my 960.
Curious to know which last version of DAZ Studio without "UNFORCED RTX Emulation" ?
If no one actually wants to take a stab at answering my question, that's cool. I mean the card will be here in two days and I'll find out for myself.
I'll be sure to post my findings, so the next person who would like to know can go "Oh hey, a clear answer! Sweet!"
You will see a difference as the Cuda cores will be more so it 'should' render faster but nobody can say for sure as every render is different, every machine and how it is used will all make a difference.
That seems to be a sympton of Iray, huh? Everything about it is as clear as mud.
I still render with my GTX980 using Daz4.10 and it works fine for testing and/or 1-2 character renders. I reinstalled 4.10 after 4.12 took away atleast a 1gig on usable GPU space and kept falling back to cpu rendering. But DS4.10 is better suited for the older video cards. My other car in the driveway has an RTX running with DS4.16. Under a minute renders also has its uses.
So if my GTX 960 is being forced to do RTX via emulation, and it's managing this well, it stands to reason my GTX 1660 Super will do even better then.
2 Minutes 10 Seconds using Sketchy Toon for Iray with the GTX960.
Anything under 4 minutes is a very reasonable render time. I remember 3DL renders taking 20-60 minutes back in the 2012's, or even longer depedning on the hair used.
My takeaway is that I'll at least have a more stable experience with the additonal VRAM, if not a smoother one in general.
My rather underpowered system (AMD 8550 black with 8GB of RAM and a 4GB AMD GPU)I had back then occasionally took days to do a 3DL render.
Yes, days.
I was ecstatic when iray first debuted.I finally had renders finishing in less than 8 hours(same day).
Remember this scene that took 3 minutes 41 seconds to render with my 960? A mere 26 seconds with my new 1660 Super!
This scene using Sketchy Toon for Iray, that took 2 minutes 8 seconds with the 960? Just 18 seconds with the 1660 Super!
I am a VERY happy camper!
Not laughing when I said 6GB is not much as a question. My Daz computers have a 256mb and 500mb ATI and Quadro on a PC and AMD. RAM in each is 3GB with Windows XP. Daz 4.6 and Daz 4.10.
3Delight is CPU only, so no GPU will affect the render times.
I kept it of course. Its fantastic. I can finally really dig into the meat of Iray shaders without having to worry about my GPU overheating, or running out of video ram and then D|S crashing, when I'm just trying to do these simple scenes.
