Install manager always gives "Download error" not being able to download anything

Hallo,

I just installed the Install manager, trying to install a DAZStudio 4.8 Beta on my computer. The manager sees all the content I have in my DAZ store just fine, but once I try to download it, it will go to 95-98 percent, then say "Download Error". With every piece of content.

If I download the content zip file manually to the Install Manager Download folder (C:/Users/Public/Documents/DAZStudio/Install Manager/Downloads) it will see it's downloaded and will install it just fine. Unfortunately I can't do the same trick with DAZStudio 4.8 Beta since it doesn't have a manual option.

Anyone knows how to solve this?

Details:
I'm running 32-bit DAZStudio and everything through Wine on Ubuntu Studio. The default settings are Windows 7 32-bit (Although Windows XP shows the same behaviour). Please, before you tell me that I should switch back to Windows and that's it's all Linux fault, could you consider the option it's not? WineHQ is reporting no errors with running the 32-bit DAZStudio or Install manager. And I've been running DAZStudio 4.6 happily for more than a year on a 32-bit wine installation.

A log is attached. The Install Manager claims it's a network error, but I'm quite sure my network was intact all the time. I've been able to use sites, download content from DAZ-site etc.

Every time Install manager tries to download something, it will go to 95-98 percent, then network speed will drop to 0 byte/s slowly. After a minute or so it will then show a Download error. Reclicking and/or deleting the part file manually and retrying didn't help.

Thanks for your help.

    Wireless or wired connection?

    Which version of WINE?

My guess is Ubuntu...I've NEVER had much luck with Ubuntu and networking. Yeah, I could surf and use the browser download manager...but anything else (expect the Ubuntu package manager)....kget (yes I use KDE), get, any bittorrent, any other downloader...all would act just that way. This was with a wireless card and Ubuntu's autoconfig. Any other distro AND the specific card drivers/config...no problems.

I have no problems running the DIM in WINE, in Slackware. What I do have problems with...the absolute mess that using the DIM makes of the content directories, because there is no consistency with file/directory name case. It is especially bad with Runtime(runtime)>Textures(textures)>Vendorname(vendorname)>Item(item) (any/all combos are seen).

Thank you very much for your reply.

I have wine 1.6.1, Ubuntu Studio 13.10, connection is wireless. Do you think it might help to connect through ethernet cable? (I'm using wireless due to convenience in the house, but I can connect directly, since it's just one download I need to get.)

Personally I don't have many programs that need networking in wine, so I don't know if it's usually a problem. Picasa indeed can't connect to Google+, but that bug was reported in WineHQ. Firefox connects just fine. But installing Firefox and Install Manager on the same wine prefix didn't allow me to use the "Download and Install" button on the DAZ site. It doesn't recognize the protocol.

I'm running the latest Wine 1.7.41 on Slackware without any of those problems..so, I'd say, yeah, it's an Ubuntu thing. Plus there have been some networking updates to Wine in between that version and the current 'beta'. There's a ton of info to be found on getting a newer Wine version into Ubuntu without having to compile it from source (though that is another option).

Try wired...I have had better luck with it in Ubuntu than wireless. I'm running wireless because I need a 53 foot long cable to connect to my router.

I had Ubuntu on my son's machine for a while...and while he had no network problems (wired), there were other things that made me develop a deep loathing for any flavor of Ubuntu.

For Download and Install to work you'll need to manually register the protocol...can't remember what the registry key is right now, because it doesn't seem to get written to the mimetypes list in Wine. If I get a chance I'll look at the Windows registry and see what key needs to be created...can't do it now, the kids are watching a movie (yes, DS is on the HTPC Windows box...). Probably just export it as reg file and post it here...

Open your favorite text editor and paste this in...save as DIM.reg

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\daz3dim]
    @="URL:daz3dim Protocol"
    "URL Protocol"=""

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\daz3dim\DefaultIcon]
    @="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\DAZ 3D\\DAZ3DIM1/DAZ3DIM.exe,0"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\daz3dim\shell]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\daz3dim\shell\open]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\daz3dim\shell\open\command]
    @="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\DAZ 3D\\DAZ3DIM1/DAZ3DIM.exe\" \"%1\""

Then open the WINE regedit and Import Registry File.

That should register the protocol and then when you click Download and Install, allow the DIM to run. Of course that is all dependent on having exes set up to automatically run in WINE...and I'm pretty sure Ubuntu does that by default.

    Thank you for your help.

I tried many combinations of the above file, but unfortunately Mozilla still doesn't recognize the protocol.
1.The first obvious "error" in the file was that I need to use {Program Files} folder instead of {Program Files (x86)}, since I have a 32-bit prefix, and not 64-bit. Changed that, didn't help.

2.Then I guessed that the backslash before the .exe in the path should be replaced by the double forward slash. Didn't help either.

3.Googling "register protocol in Firefox" pointed to a different registry-entry, namely HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT instead of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Tried to change that, again to no avail.

Also changing to ethernet still gives a Download error. Do you think it's worth trying to install DIM under xfce Mint? I know it's Debian-based and similar to Ubuntu, but maybe it will be different from Ubuntu Studio. And I already have a parallel Mint installation on this computer. If it works, I can just copy the wine folder to the Ubuntu studio. Just a (hopeful) guess.

    Thanks again.

Mint...maybe. I've generally had better luck/found it easier to do things than Ubuntu. I was using Debian on this box, earlier this year and did similar things from Knoppix...and I had the DIM running in Knoppix. While running Debian and Knoppix (that's what I was doing at first on this machine) I was having similar problems...things just working in Knoppix, but not working in Debian, even though Knoppix is another Debian derivative.

I have the Local_Machine key and the fake IE in WINE (don't have FF installed right now) tried to open the DIM and failed, because I don't have IT installed right now (on this computer), like I thought I did. The error I got was that the program in question, the DIM itself, was not found...not the 'don't understand the protocol' error. So I'll try again, later and see if I can get it going...it just worked in Knoppix.
