How does DS load scenes? What causes them to freeze / crash?

This happened a while ago and I ended up just deleting the scene. I was feeling ambitious and made an olde-tyme gentleman's club scene. I posed 5 men in suits with cigars and scotch glasses. I think I had a couple dynamic clothes draped over the backs of sofas, chairs etc. Some lights. Rendered fine.

However, when I saved it and tried to reopen it... It crashed every time I tried to load it. Almost every time. Sometimes it would work, but if I tried to pose anyone it would crash. After a couple hour of frustration I simply destroyed all my work and put it behind me.

Does it just try to load the entire scene into RAM or something?

Sounds like it could be RAM issue.

For a large scene sometimes you can split it up into multiple scene and composite it together once rendered to conserve memory. Also delete anything in the scene that will not be seen in the final scene too.
