    I just wanted to ask,

are there any plans for writing an Iray skin shader with unique attributes that are specific to skin?

The Iray Uber shader has all the attributes of the MDL specification. Skin, metal, paint, etc. Are you asking for a shader that takes away everything that isn't skin?

I was thinking about a more skin specific shader with different layers of the human skin and so on.

For example, here is Arnold´s skin shader - https://support.solidangle.com/display/AFMUG/Skin

You can see the skin has 3 SSS layers (Shallow Scatter, Mid Scatter, Deep Scatter) and 2 specular layers.

I believe there is only 1 SSS layer in the Iray Uber shader and then several other layers such as the flakes and top coat of course.

I mean the Iray Uber shader is great, I was just wondering whether something like this was also planned for Iray or whether it would be too complicated/time consuming to write such skin shader.

Probably should be asking Nvidia that...unless things can be stacked in ShaderMixer, the Studio Iray 'shaders' are limited to what Nvidia has exposed.

    I wondered about that.

Do the shaders actually vary between different versions of Iray (Iray for Maya and Max for example might come with different shaders) or are the shaders we see in DS all that Nvidia has given us so far? Or did DS developers create those shaders themselves?

If Nvidia wants to compete with other renderers on the market for Maya lets say, they´ll have to have an Iray skin shader. All major renderers out there have it including their other renderer mentalray.

Iray shaders, beginning with the 2015 version, use MDL. Note that several other render engines and software products have announced MDL support. The Iray Uber shader uses the entire MDL spec and Shader Mixer is the first graphic user interface that allows MDL shader creation. If it is an MDL shader DS can read it and DS can build it.

    So it's complete?

    No funky quirks...no, 'almost'?

I see, so it should be possible to build a more complicated skin shader in the Shader Mixer using MDL for someone who has the knowledge how to do so.

Unless/until the spec changes. That doesn't mean that it won't take study and work to get the most out of it. What you need is there though.

    Or just using the Uber.

    Good.

Can we expect an update on the 3Delight side of things to get it up to the current functionality?

  • " 'So, the release version is now more currant than the public build, and we shouldn't run the public build at all?'

    Correct. :)"

I'm in the same fog; just realized the thing to do is uninstall the puiblic build. But I think my Install Manager is messed up. Neither program is listed on the Installed tab; both are listed on the Ready to Download tab. I can't have IM uninstall them from there, and my Windows Control Panel doesn't recognize either one - only IM. But they're both definitely installed, or I've been having quite the mind trip for the last two months! How do I uninstall the public build?

The ready to download means that you don't have a copy of the compressed content on your computer. This will happen to all your content if you choose to delete the files after they have been installed.

Can you post a screen shot of the installed tab?

You have the main program "Daz Studio 4.8(Win 64-bit) " Hidden for some reason. You should leave that one visable so it can be installed and updated as needed.

Unless you want to beta test features that may or may not work I would just leave anything marked beta hidden. If you are having trouble with one version of Studio ,,adding additional sperate versions isn't going to make it any easier to help :)

...also you only have 13 items installed, so you are most likely missing a very large amount of content.

No, after you install something you can delete the zip and it won't show as Ready to Download. unless it's been updated.

I really can't believe that there is no new beta since the release of the public version 4.8.0.59. Did you really have nothing new, that must be tested???
