Curtains with open/close morphs
I need to use a dorm room for a VN, but none of the ones that I owned has opening/closing window curtains suitable for day/night scenes. I tried to find a proper kitbash in the tens of appartment/living/sleeping rooms that I have, but none has a properly openable curtain. A few have a dual open and close curtain version, but none with opening morphs (with the exception of the emerald room, but its curtain is really too wide to be used in a dorm). I extended my search to shower curtains, theater, etc, and I finaly found a properly morphing curtain in a fitting room (kudos to Zeddicus!) that can be adapted to my dorm with minor scaling/reshading.
I completely understand that creating a morphing curtain is complex and may not be economically interesting for a PA when creating a room. But why not a product with just these curtains that can be used by users that need to have openable curtains. With several sizes, number of folds, open/close/ajar morphs, dforce support (for wind or pushing the curtain with a hand), maybe several styles of poles, textures, etc. There are several assets with artistic drapes or wind effects for large curtains or studios decor, but nothing for a simple windows curtain.

I don't have it but would this product not work?
EDIT: The Seaside Apartment has open/close morph on the curtains in the Livingroom and Bedroom. And if you want to look a litte out of the box the Rock Star Series - The Stage has morphing curtains for the Venue Hallway Curtain Prop.
Thanks for your suggestions.
Actually, as I mentioned, I use Z fitting room and it is OK for my problem. The window is small (say 1mx1m), fitting room curtain width is OK and it has morph to modify the height that maintain the size of the holes for the pole and I can use it at ~250%. The other curtains are too high and too large. Scaling a curtain for a window that is 2m+ wide down to 1m will look weird, too many folds, etc. And the studio drape asset is more for artistic draping (Esha also has a similar product), while I just want closing curtains.
My point was more general. Probably I am not the only one to want an opening/closing curtain. If a room has a non opening door, it is easy to fix that with a dformer. But transforming a non opening curtain is very complex and requires the use of a modelling software. While kitbashing can give a solution, a curtain specific product could be general enough to be used in many environments and have interesting features. For instance, to use in a VN, I would largely prefer a dforce curtain than one with beautiful drapes. It is not simple to add dforce so that the top of the curtain is not deformed around the pole during simulation while a wind node blows or a hand wipes the bottom.
Ahh, yeah I see. I imagine that doing it properly is very hard so that's why most PAs don't do it or just stick with the two separate props for open and close. Hopefully someone with the right skills will see your post and see the possibility to fill the gap with a suitable product :)
Not sure if you all are being sarcastic or not. Morphing curtains is very easy to do.
If the curtains are a separate object, there are those dials on the Parameters Tab that can be employed.
If not, then there is the ever handy Hexagon with which one can make morphs too.
To make a dForce curtain's top remain as is while draping, there is the dForce weight map that can be applied. In Windows, it's holding down the Alt key while using the weight map brush to remove the weight.
My post is no way sarcastic.
I searched my (large) library for four or five hours yesterday and was not able to find any suitable curtain with a open dial, besides the Zeddicus fitting room. There are some (very few) that are morphable for a large patio door curtain, but they look terrible when scaled to a small window. But if you happen to know products that contain a morphable small curtain, please tell me, I would be very interested.
Of course, anything can be done with a modeller, but this not a very easy morph. The folds must remain evenly distributed (but not too evenly), the pole holes must not be deformed and their angle must be modified in a realistic way, etc. Far beyond my poor modelling skills, I am afraid.
I have tried to apply a dforce 0%/100% weightmap and the results where not good in terms of realism after a simulation. You need some kind of gradient. I could probably determine the size of the gradient surface (10cm? 20cm? 30cm?) by experimenting and comparing the simulation results and I will maybe do that when I have a couple of hours free, but the problem is not so simple. Also the dforce parameters (stiffness, density, etc) must be properly tweaked.
My posts were not meant to be sarcastic. I am still way too new to have tried my hand at modelling so I would know very little about how easy or difficult certain things would be. Given the lack of morphable curtains my assumption was that this was not that easy or straight forward as the alternative would be down to the creator being lazy or just assuming that the product would not be used for a night scene (odd assumption for a bedroom)?
Okay, well morphing curtains and/or making them to be useable is not super difficult. I put their lack of existence in the same bag as doors that don't open.
https://www.renderosity.com/users/PetuniaPetals/freestuff Is where I just happen to have a few non-pro morphs made for curtains in the St. Patrick's Day Dinner set. I'm not advocating buying sets just because I made morphs for it -- but if you happen to already own it, hay they're free.
I own a number of sets, IF I happen to own a set you have I might be able to make some curtain morphs for it too.
As to dials saying that they are "open" ... they might not say so, but still might "open" curtains, etc. All depends upon how they were made.
How about learning how to model ... curtains!!! EASY beginner guide ... open Hexagon, make a curvy line, select all the lines, extract upwards the mesh. Curtain. I should be able to whip up a little tutorial for you if you'd like. Then you can make curtains for any window in any room that you want to.
tbh I'm not the dForce expert. I do know how to apply a dForce weight map and take away weights - and yes that can be done gradually.
Hmmm, well I don't remember buying it but it seems I did back in June so I have grabbed the freebie - thank you very much for offering it :)
No problem. Yes it was in the $1.99 sales basket as I recall. That's when we tend to purchase a lot of things we don't remember, me too ;-)
Ahh, that explains it. It looks like a lovelly product but not something I am likely to use in any render in the near future so was a bit confused why I had it. Definitely have padded out my library during those big sales tho. Hopefully the right scene will work it's way into my head at some point in the future that it will be perfect for :)
Thanks for these informations Catherine. Actually, I started this thread because I spent a complete afternoon digging in my library to test every single curtain. A curtain product would have made me gain a lot of time. Maybe using a modeller can also be a time saver, but TBH I have never had good experiences with hexagon or blender except for very simple tasks. I should spend some time to learn to properly use them.
For instance, I tried with your hexagon "easy beginner guide". No problem to create a curvy line. But I failed to find how to extract upwards the mesh... I am afraid to be a hopeless cause!
For my present project, the zeddicus fitting room curtain works correctly. Except for the dforce aspect, but it is a minor problem and I will find ad hoc solutions if required. But many thanks for your kind proposal.
Visual tutorials tend to illustrate better how to do things in modeling I find. I like making tutorials and need something to do so I'll see if I can whip one up. It is truly an easy project and wonderful for a feeling of success :-)
That would be very kind of you :) I am sure there will be others who would benefit from it in addition to us two.
Tried my hand at some basic rigging the other day so I guess this would be a good thing to tackle next!
I have a series of images made. I need to edit them and then paste them into a .pdf file so possibly sometime tomorrow it'll be uploaded to Renderosity. Takes a short while then for it to be made public.
First project, one very basic drape aka shades ;-)
Thanks a lot.
You're welcome. The .pdf is in the proof reading basket, planning to upload it tomorrow [Friday] and usually within 24 to 48 hours products become available.
The Cover :-)
There are working blinds in this product:
