Computer help

If I could please get some advice on I desktop I am looking at.......

iBUYPOWER,  Intel i7, windows 8.1,

16 GB memory, 1 TB hardrive

dedicated Nvidia GTX 960,  2 GB,  Ram speed 1600 megahertz, video memory 2000 megabytes

My question is, How will this work at rendering?

    It should work pretty good

    Thanks Frank,

I'm interseted in doing animated music videos. With a system like this, can you estimate how long it would take to render a 3 to 4 minute animation?

    Thanks

It would really depend on how heavy your scene is.

Only thing I'd say is that the Nvidia GTX 960 card is not as powerful as it sounds. It has 1024 cuda cores (compared to my old GTX 660 which has 960 cuda cores), so don't expect wonderous things from it. Saying that, it is an Nvidia card, so thats a plus for Iray rendering.

(by further comparison the more expensive, but much better, GTX 970 card has 1664 cuda cores and renders much faster)

I take it its a PC bundle you're looking at? You're not buying the component parts and putting them together yourself?

I use the GTX 960 with 4GB RAM and it work great.

I was wondering... do you have a YouTube video that you have done and the graphics you used and what the render time was on that video?  I hate to be a pain, but I'd just like to have an idea on what to purchase.

    Thanks

The one he's looking at is the 2GB version though. The GTX 960 4GB isn't bad, I'm just saying that for an extra £60 you could get a GTX 970, which is much better. Depends on your budget and whether its a bundle deal or not.

Here's an idea of what I'm talking about http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=GeForce+GTX+960

    Was that to me?

    Yes

I'm assuming your talking about my banner right? If so it our new pack that jsut realsed the other day. Total rendering time for the 3 object promoed was about 35 mintues in IRay. All of it was put together in Photoshop. My wife DAZ_ann0314 has some videos on youtube but not covering this kind of stuff. One was modeling basic stuff like vases and the other is painting in Photoshop. We don't get much time to do videos. We work on average 12-16 hr a day on packs. If you meant something else let me know and I'll try to answer.

Hi again, thanks for your help. I was able to find a similar desktop with a  GTX 970 for a few hundred dollars more.

Have fun with your 970.  I got my hands on one yesterday and it's like owning a Ferrari instead of a Ford, by comparison with my previous system.

    Cheers,

    Alex.

Just be aware with the 970. It will only recognize 3.5 GB of your 4GB. The 960 and 980 both will read the full 4GB

As I understand it the full 4GB will be recognised, but there will be a performance hit if the last .5GB has to be used.

In a game situation it may be a few fps...in a render, probably not noticeable.

Yep - what Richard said. The last 0.5GB won't perform as effectively, but that still doesn't make the 960 4GB stand up to the 970. The 960 is the "budget" option in the 900 series and uses the cheaper GM206 GPU with the memory running on a 128-bit wide bus, which constrains the card's use of that 4GB memory, as opposed to 256-bit for the 970 and 980 (which use the better GM204 GPU). The 960 also has less than 2/3 the cuda cores (shader processors) of the 970 (1024 vs 1664) which, as I understand it, makes a fairly big difference to 3D rendering.

The 960 4GB is a good card, don't get me wrong, but if you can afford the 970 then its worth the increase in price.
