Rendering Garibaldi Hair in Iray?

Hi,

I just splashed out on the Garibaldi Hair system and am enjoying it so far.. .only thing is that I can't seem to get it to show up in Iray renders, only 3Delight? Any advice on how to fix this would be much appreciated.

Thank you :)

You will need to use the option in Garibaldi's file menu to export to OBJ, the hairs use RiSpec curves and those are a feature of 3Delight (or broadly, Renderman-compliant renderers) only. The same is true of Look at My Hair though an update to that with a simpler work-flow is apparently being worked on.

Ah right, thank you :) At least I know that's a limitation it has and that's probably saved me several days of swearing and wondering what I was doing wrong. :)

Much appreciated and will keep an eye out for anything which changes that in the future.

    Cheers

One of the lesser know, but more interesting tidbits of information...even a rather poly heavy obj exported hair, may end up using less video memory in Iray than a 'traditional' trans-mapped hair.  The obj hair doesn't need the extra subdivisions (most of the time), all the image maps (no diffuse/displacement/normals/transparency) so even if it's a fairly large file, all you are really dealing with memory-wise is the geometry.

The big down side...you don't have the morphs for changing the poses, so you'd have to edit it and export one each pose.
