Blood vessels/subdermal details-which Surface setting do you use?

I've been having fun painting my own subdermal layers (blood vessels, bruises, etc), but I'm curious what Surface layer other people are using them on. I just assumed the SS layer, as I think the Genesis Essentials optional maps are called SS, but the last couple of figures I bought (and am trying to emulate, lol) are using the Translucency layer instead, with nothing under SS. Are there any advantages/disadvantages to the different approaches?

For blood vessel details, I would think something like that goes on the map used for Translucency Color and usually labeled with "SSS" iirc. I'm not sure what "SS" is. I use the Iray Uber shader & not the newer PBR one.
