Help - Iray render speed/settings

Basicly, when rendering with Iray, it takes a long time. Is there any way to speed up the rendering time?

I have tried the 'manual oversampling' technique of lowering the samples and increaseing the resolution (resample at 50% in post)

I have tried lowering the max render time, but doesn't render fully.

Below is a render with changed settings as:

Max Samples: 600

Max Time (secs): 300

Here are my comp specs, not great so that may be an issue;

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955

RAM: 8GB (unganged)

GPU: AMD Radeon HD700 Series

HDD: Intel 535 120GB SSD

Is there anything else I can do that will speed up render time?

Video card doesn't come into play...so replacing that with an Nvidia card, even a 4 GB 700 series would speed things up.

But, what are your lights? Surfaces/materials?  What are your render times using 3Delight for a similar scene?

I am using 4x DistantLights (2x On, 2x Diffuse) Using 3Delight, it takes about <5mins to render.

Surfaces/materials I havent chnaged much from the default Genesis 2 model, only a few textures.

I am still new to Daz3D and Iray. Are there some basic settings I need to set to get Iray working better?

I have also seen Iray light packs in the store, do I need to have proper Iray lights?

The best way to start with Iray, in my opinion, is to use the HDRI that comes with it.   Iray is an unbiased renderer (look that up) and it does not require several lights or sets of lights like 3Delight does.   It works in a similar fashion to Luxrender.

Load your figure, go to the Environment option in the Render Settings pane with Iray selected, make sure the Environment Mode is set to Dome and Scene.   If you want to see some of the background in your render, switch Draw Dome to 'On'.

You can load any HDRI image into the Environmen Map option, and draw dome will make it visible as a background.   There are loads of free ones on the net, but the ones here are excellent http://noemotionhdrs.net/hdrother.html

Make sure that you have the Headlamp switched OFF for the camera that you are using to render with.

I read that using more lights can speed up the rendering process. Is there a huge difference? and can i add extra lights just for the sake of speeding up rendering?

I did some reading and experimenting with surfaces and environment lighting etc. The outcome is looking good, but still taking a long time.

I'm gonna guess it's a hardware issue and I need a better CPU?

Not CPU.If you want to use Iray AND be fast, you need an Nvidia graphics card. More Cuda cores is generally better. Also more Vram because the whole scene loads..

I have a GTX780 and could fully render your scene in under a minute at a resolution of 1000 x 750.

Look at my example on http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/57355/show-us-your-iray-renders-part-iv/p29. Less than one minute. The key is the Nvidia gpu

Unfortuanetly, getting an Nvidia gfx card is off the table atm. But surely, if Iray is using the CPU instead of a gpu, then upgrading the CPU or RAM or something will speed up render times?

What about the render settings, is there something there I can change?

I did a render last night, set max render time to 4hrs and max samples to 20000 (hoping to get the best quality over a long period of time) However when I woke up and saw the final render, it looked like some parts were still not rendered. Not highly noticable from screencap, but bright pixels on black material, as well as some fuzziness in other areas..

The settings aren't a 'this + this = that'...it will stop at whichever comes first.  So if you set it for 4 hrs and that is the first stop condition reached, then it will stop, no matter how 'done' it is.

As for other upgrades...what socket is your 955?  And RAM is it DDR3?  What motherboard?

Because, a 4 GB GT740 Nvidia card is cheaper than a total core upgrade or even just an AMD FX-6300 processor (if your motherboard would support any FX series).

    CPU is AM3

    RAM is DDR3

    mobo is GA-880GM-USB3

Ok...yeah, you can bump up to an FX series CPU and memory is still cheap enough.  But 'bang for buck' is at the low end 4 GB video cards.   At about $20 cheaper than an FX-6300 you would get, with that being the only replacement, GPU rendering which will blow away just about any CPU upgrade on that motherboard.  (you can get a GT740 4 GB for around $90...a FX-6300 is around $110)  Another 8 GB wouldn't be amiss in any case.

Is it possible to export the scene from Daz3D to render in another program? Such as Rhino or Blender?

    Would that have any benefits?

Try to use the filter Neat Image . 5 seconds in Photoshop and all the noise go away.
