View through Spotlight- limited range

Once I back up a spotlight a thousand feet or so I can no longer see anything on the ground plane. Is there a way to increase the range when viewing through a spotlight? The range that a distant light has? Currently my solution is to parent the spotlight to a camera which also has an infinite view-range. I'm using a spotlight for the versatility over distant lights.

thanks you's!

reserv888- Good- I hope we get some ideas here.

I haven't really found a way around this yet. If the spotlight is close enough to see your objects then the shadows spread out as if from- well- a spotlight. Parenting the light with a camera works pretty well so far but changing the spotlight spread is some guess-work.
