How to save the "Blend Mode" of an applied overlay?

To obtain correct results after applying an eyeshadow overlay, I've found that the "Diffuse Overlay Weight" (in Surfaces->Face->Diffuse->Overlay) must be modified. So, in the "Layered Image Editor" I change the "Blend Mode" from "Source Over" to "Layered Alpha Blend". A rendered image now shows correct results (image 2).
However, if I save the scene and re-open it, the "Blend Mode" always fall back to "Source Over" instead of staying on "Layered Alpha Blend". Obviously a problem when doing batch render.
Is there a way to "bake" the "Blend Mode" of an applied overlay?
