Controlling Transparency

I found the tutorial on how to edit the transparency map for a piece of clothing to make parts of it be completely transparent (disappear).  My question is: is there a way to take a solid piece of clothing and make it opaque - semi-transparent?  If so, can I adjust the map to make parts of the clothing semi-transparent instead of completely transparent?

    Use mid-tones for the degree of transparency you want, e,g, 127,127,127 for 50% transparent,

    On the transparency map?  The tutorial says that map has to be black and white.  Two color.  Can it be grey for opaque areas?

    Black and white just means grayscale, no colors, but varying shades of gray are fine.
