Import 3ds file?

Hi everyone. I'M new to Daz3d. I've gotten a 3ds file from the net which I would like to import into my scene. I got to file > import but see no options to import 3ds file extension. An I missing something? The help pages say you can import from 3D studio max. Many thanks, Nabil

Nope, 3ds is not one of the supported formats.

You will need to convert it to an obj or other supported format (I prefer obj) in a modeling program.  There are also some viewer programs that offer 'translation' functions, like this

  • I've never seen an option to import a .max or .3ds (both 3DSMAX files) directly into Daz3D.  Various 3D authoring programs can open some 3DS formats and convert them but it's not always successful or pretty.
Daz works best with the .obj geometry format and will import it.  There are some constraints with the imported file that enable it to work properly within Daz such as using groups, non-manifold geometry, 'winding order' of vertex's (I'm a little hazy on this one), and UV maps.  I use 3DS Max to export as an obj file then do any modifications in Blender.  The newer .max format can only be opened by 3DS Max.    I suggest you give Blender ( http://www.blender.org/download/ ) a try.  See if it will open your .3ds file.  If you're new to 3D in general you have a long (but not necessarily difficult) learning curve ahead of you, but it's quite doable.

Others with more experience in this are invited to chime in.

From max you need an FBX or an OBJ.

If you have Poser, import and save as a prop. Then you can import that prop from Poser into DS the normal way.
