Errors in blondie9999's "Fantasy and Sci-Fi Effects."

Has anyone had any luck working with these?  I'm unable to get the effects to generate either on their own near an object or on an object.  If I select an object, I get an "error while reading the file."  If I select a primitive, however, such as a sphere, I'm told I have to select an object within the scene first.  This also has the effect of freezing everything in DS and forcing me to restart it.

The log file gives me the following messages:

Opening file Flex Effect.daz...
Error setting pointers while reading file C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library/B9999_FX/Flex Effect.daz : C Exception: Memory Access Violation - Attempted to read memory at address 0x00000000
Error loading file C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library/B9999_FX/Flex Effect.daz.

Substitute the appropriate file name for "Flex Effect" if you like' it's the same thing.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled the package twice now.  Any ideas?

  • I would suggest that you send in a ticket.

  • Probably should.  I was wondering if it was something I was doing wrong or if I'd found a bug.  Thanks.

I can get some of the presets working if I load the Poser "figure" first and then expand the root node of the primitive in the parameters pane and select all the bones. Only then will some of the .dsb presets load. It is also interesting to note that this has been broken for some years now and I don't know how many tickets where rasied with no fix ever provided.

This is a really old product, the DS files were made for something like DS 2 and have been broken in newer versions for quite some time.

IIRC if you install and load the poser version of the base items and then apply the DS materials to them it will work.

not all of the DS mat presets work, most do but some won't load at all.

  • Instead of double-clicking to apply the D|S MATs, try click-dragging from the Content tab onto the FX object in the Viewport. For some arcane reason possibly dependent on the phase of the moon and how many times your cat walks widdershins around your ankles while you sit at your computer, that seems to work more reliably.

As for the objects themselves, the old .daz files never worked right since D|S2 and are pretty much a complete waste of time. I've loaded the Poser versions and converted them into proper native D|S files as Support Assets.

I'd really like this set to get a complete overhaul one of these days, the idea is excellent, but it's such an old item it doesn't work at all well in modern D|S versions without a lot of work.

  • Sorry to hear you're having problems with this.  As Leana said, this Is a very old product-- going on nine years old-- and I suspect that DAZ has changed DS in some way that "broke" the product.  That happened a few years ago as well.  The product was fixed then, and the last I heard, it was working properly.  But now...?  Your best bet is to contact DAZ and see if someone there knows what the problem is.  It appears that the version of DS you're using doesn't like the old ".daz" file format.

Note to SpottedKitty:  I've been thinking for some time of doing a newer, expanded (or at least, improved in some ways) version of this product, so thank you for the encouragement!

A lot of Weird Stuff™ seems to have happened to a small but random selection of those old .daz scene files. Especially in the last couple of D|S versions; a certain amount of backwards compatibility has definitely been lost somewhere along the road.

<ahem> Yes, I'd definitely be interested. Maybe something to take better advantage of the way multi-layered glowy stuff is now much easier to set up in Iray?

Ummm...wasn't there an SDK/scripting update in there somewhere?  Also some stuff was depricated...I think.  I do know that qt has had some changes in the last couple of versions and Studio scripting is pretty much qt scripting...

    That would be great :)

I had the same problem with the DAZ Studio 1 Base Content when Studio 4.7 came out. In Studio 4.6 it all worked well, but the changes for 4.7 seem to have broke the kinda old stuff like that. My solution was to re-install Studio 4.6, and then save the whole stuff as presets in DUF format. Although DS4.6's .dsb and .dsa files still work, too.

I think a lot of that is that update I was thinking of....I know somewhere in there that some stuff was changed.

I agree, I'd love to see an updated version of this product.

This still fixes the issue in 4.8, thank you!

"Problems" doesn't half cover it. I can't get any of the effects to load in DS 4.8 at all. Anything I try to pull into a scene, even with a brand new file fresh after a restart, causes an instant crash.

I'm afraid I'll be asking Daz for a refund on this one.

  • Hi---

Sorry, but this is a VERY old product-- from 2005 or 2006-- and DAZ Studio has changed a great deal since then.  Several of the changes made in DAZ Studio over the years have caused several of my products not to work correctly.  Unlike Poser, DAZ  Studio has shown itsefl NOT to be "backward compatible."

My position has always been thus:  "If the product worked in 2005, then it ough to work in 2015-- and if it doesn't, because DAZ changed the software, then that's DAZ's fault, not mine."

So-- if the product worked back in 2005 or 2006-- which it must have, otherwose it would not have passed Q.A.-- then it should work now, and if it doesn't, then the problem is not with the product itself, but with changes made to DAZ Studio.  If you have problems, please contact DAZ.

  • Yup, that's what I've done.

  • I can't get any of the effects to load in DS 4.8 at all. Anything I try to pull into a scene, even with a brand new file fresh after a restart, causes an instant crash.

Are you loading the D|S-format .daz scene files, or the Poser-format .cr2 figure files? I've never had an actual crash with the .daz files, it just doesn't work right. What I have done, though, is load the Poser files then convert and save them into proper D|S Figure Assets in the modern .duf file format. That does seem to work properly, although the names of the morph dials can get a bit scrambled.

The D|S materials do sort-of work if I drag from the Content tab onto the object in the Viewport, instead of the usual select-and-click. I sometimes find I need to look at the actual script coding of the materials files, though, and replicate the effects in the Surfaces tab, to make sure all the old-style parameters have applied properly.

It can be made to work, but the D|S program itself has changed so much over the years, it does need a bit of tweaking (sometimes with the software equivalent of a large mallet for "persuasion" purposes) and a bit of patience.
