It's been a while, Dogwaffle now does OBJ files - coming here soon

It's been a long while since we had an update at Daz3D for PD Howler, aka Project Dogwaffle Howler edition. Must have been pre-pandemic.

I'm putting together the release material for latest build Based on version 16, aka Howler 2023, build 95 ish. It comes with the new improved OBJ loader/parser/renderer. Actually the renderer is old, scanline, no shadows, much better is coming in rperhaps a month+, to integrate a newer graphics pipeline that Dan wroyte 2 years ago and is already in the API. If you're a game developer, try it. Check the API playlist at youtube.com/pdhowler

The new OBJ loader/parser now also supports 4-sided polygons, i.e. quads. Before it was limited to triangles with uv and vn just for offering our 3D trees, of which there are almost 2 dozens. Now you'll see many more use cases, and it's meant to create multiple snaps of the current view after loading, collecting them into an animated brush. Then you can throw filters at that such as edge detect and go further with it. Or turn it into a regular animation, image sequence, and do motion estimated frame interpolation for super slomo.

If you're curious, grab a hold of this: https://www.thebest3d.com/obj-renderer - it is a bit of a flashback of what other forms of 3D we've had for a while, and where the new OBJ loader is taking us.

Hope you'll join for the ride. I'll try to send the release to Daz this weekend, and Monday is a holiday, perfect. Stay tuned. Let us know what you think?

-Philip

Unless you're not interested in attracting new users, it might be helpful to explain in a few wordsd what PD Howler is and why Daz customers might be interested in it.

thanks Sevrin, I sure plan on describing and showing tutorials on using it with OBJ exports from Carrara, DAZ STudio, Hexagon and Blender to name a few.

It's a paint program at the core. With lots of extras. FIlters, animation, many brushes, foliage stuff and more.

Here's the Stinger.... under attack. I'll do some tutorials for similars. This model originally came with textures but I didn't look for everything just the geometry o.bj file and it didn't come with .mtl so I created a simple default material in a makeshift material file.

    Watch for tutorials

Here is a new tutorial on creating space scene backgrounds, focused on nebulae

In the prior Stinger tutorial we used something similar, I wanted to show a few tips and tricks related to that background

@staigermanHello. I've been a 3D hobbyist since 2007 and have more time now to explore since retiring in 2019. I've had Howler for a few years and upgraded once before my most recent upgrade earlier this week to Howler 2023 to explore things that earlier releases did not have. I've been watching several of your recent videos about using OBJ files in Howler; the most recent one was part 12(a) - Creating larger background images - Space Nebulae. In your videos, I frequently cannot see your mouse pointer so when you perform an action, I cannot tell where in the interface you were to do it; that may be because sometimes you are using keyboard shortcuts. If there is any way that you can enhance your mouse pointer (or mention when you are using a keyboard shortcut), it would be much appreciated.

I'll try to remember that, good advice. I will also check if the screen capture tool I use mostly has a way to highlight (circle) the pointer.

    I rarely use shortcuts btw.

But I will also try to use words to describe the places I'm going with the cursor.

Who knows, perhaps ChatGPT or other Generative tools will be able to mimic the steps from the words ;-)

Some of the videos are beginning level and those definitely need more careful attention to how to or where and why.

Here's a class on Howler 2023 coming soon:

Also, Howler 2023 is now available here at Daz. I call it the OBJ-oy release ;-)

    Philip,

Hello.  I just watched Dogwaffle does 3D - Part 13 on your YouTube channel and I can now see your mouse pointer in the video.  Thanks.  I use PointerFocus (https://www.pointerfocus.com) to enhance my onscreen mouse pointer when I conduct a webinar or meeting; I used to use it in my classroom before I retired a few years ago.  Some online video presenters use it as well.  I discovered it a few years ago from Jay Versluis (The WP Guru) in one of his YouTube videos on DazStudio.  The software is very inexpensive ($12.50 US) and does a great job at making your mouse more visible onscreen.
