Does it work well with iray? Glass Gambit: Chess Set and Shader Presets

Does anyone know if this product delivers good results with iray renders? Or is it primarily for the 3Delight render engine?

I will be honest, I've already got some glass textures, but this set looks really inticing because of the wide variety of colors and textures.

But, as I'm moving more toward iray, I need to be sure this will work well (i.e. does it have caustics?) before getting it.

Links to renders using this product would be greatly appreciated.

  • No problem at all. I don't own this set but I know a few people who use Iray on it. Looks impressive.

You would simply apply Iray's glass shaders to the material zones of these pieces. Caustics is a feature of the shader, not the geometry, so you apply an Iray glass shader to the piece, and turn the Caustics filter on. Note that the caustics effect is best when you see light transmitting through, so be sure to position lights opposite the camera and to one side, with the piece somewhere in the middle.

You can also experiment with the Iray diamond shader, which is more dispersive. This creates a rainbow effect, because the Abbe value is increased. (Abbe is a type of dispersive prism, and is also the name of the person who invented it.) You can play with the colors to tint the glass/diamond.

The gold and silver in the pieces can be done using Iray's standard set of shaders, which come with presets for various metals.

  • Thanks for the input. I've decided to wait on this package and go for the Leather Shaders, instead: http://www.daz3d.com/iray-fashion-leathers

  • Here is a sample: Just rendered this in Iray using my friends machine. This took 7 minutes as a 4K UHD TIFF using the Nvidia Iray engine. Very simple lighting and no background....

Certainly much more universal! Iray does a terrific job simulating leather.

You might want to round out that set with this freebie:

Manually play with the bump strength of the texture for a wider variety of styles.

  • Cool, I'll play with that too.

  • DIGITALUS49: Thanks for the render! That looks cool, but I'm glad I went with the leathers.

TOBOR: Thanks for the link. I sometimes forget about the stuff over at ShareCG. I will definitely add that to my collection.
