Transfer Utility causes Daz to crash when using custom figures

Hello,

I'm not sure if this will reach the tech staff (I reached out to support without luck), but I'd like to point out a problem with the Transfer Utility. It currently does not function for custom characters that have been rigged using Figure Setup. Attempting to create clothing/accessories for custom characters causes an immediate crash when utilizing the Transfer Utility tool. As an aspiring content creator, I find this to be a rather burdensome obstacle.

  • Hello,

I'm currently creating a custom character using Daz's rigging system. It uses the Genesis bone structure, but is not a Genesis character. I'm trying to attach my armor to the character, but when I accept the AutoFit dialog, the software crashes.

Is there a way around this?

  • Just wondering if I should contact Daz3D directly, as this is a rather advanced problem dealing with their software.

  • Did you create a clone shape for the source figure?

  • Hello Richard,

I'm not entirely sure what you are referring to. I do use the Transfer Utility, selecting Mangog (source), and Armor (target). When it finishes this dialog, Daz crashes.

The mesh is not a clone, but is a custom mesh I have created. The rigging is based on Genesis 2 Male, which I extracted using the Figure Setup dialog. You can view my idea here:

I am trying to put armor on the character that I have created.

    Regards,

    Mythcons

  • Would it help if I uploaded the figure and armor somewhere for download? Don't want to take up anyone's time, but I think I can contribute a lot of content for Daz if I can get past this problem.

You can submit a support ticket and attach the files.  SInce it uses the Genesis skeleton you wouldn't be able to upload it anywhere else.

  • Hey Mike,

It is based on the Genesis 2 skeleton (e.g. uses the naming template), but is not an exact duplicate. Does that matter? It would be unfortunate as I would like to submit this as a free download. I will talk with Daz3D. Thank you for the suggestion.

  • Unfortunately, tech support is unable to assist me as it is custom content. I understand, but it leaves me with few options.

  • Okay, I used the template I created for Mangog and transferred it to my armor. With a bit of tweaking, I think I can use this method to create conforming armor for my character.

  • Using the naming convention alone would not, as far as I can see, be an issue - using the weight maps, even as a starting point, would.

By a clone I meant did you create a shape for your figure that matched the shape of the original figure for which the clothes were made - that is an essential requirement for AuoFit (though its absence should cause a crash).

  • Hey Richard,

Thank you for the comment. I didn't use the Genesis weight maps, I just applied weight maps to the groups using the 'Apply to Groups' command and then smoothed them out with the brush. I am discussing sharing the content with Daz3D support. I hope I can share it, as I put a lot into it -- and would like to use this as a jumping point to create custom content as a contributer.

  • Okay, I was looking at the DSON Editor and it looks like I need to create projection templates for Mangog (the character in question) for the Transfer Utility to work. The Transfer Utility will not work unless this is done.

And as long as I don't copy anything from any Daz3D character, I should be allowed to share the final model, according to tech support.

  • I've merged your threads on th4e cashes to the Transfer Utility version.

If using Transfer Utility on custom figures always crashed there would be more reports - almost any figure that isn't a conformer is likely to have been created via Figue Setup. DS should not, of coruse, crash and if we can figure out what particular combination of factors and versions is the issue here a bug report, with steps to reproduce, should be made. Have you tried using an extrememly simple figure - just a couple of bones, say - to see if you get the same issue there?

    Hello,

I don't mean to necro this thread, but I've started up my Daz 3D projects again and the problem I previously experienced remains. Since this is a completely new figure, and the problem has carried over to these files, I can only assume that its a reoccuring problem independent of my geomeotry and rigging. My geometry is clean, and the rigging and weight mapping are clean.

Is there anyone I can consult with with advanced knowledge of the Daz3D software? I would be more than willing to share my files.

    SOLVED!

When working with custom characters, deselect everything except Weight Maps, Face Groups, and Morph Targets to transfer.

Additional info: To get the most out of the Transfer Utility with a custom character, you need to create 'Regions' using the geometry tool. The problem I was experiencing was due to my model not having regions or selection sets assigned. The Transfer Utility would crash, because the info didn't exist. If you do not add these to the base model, you will not be able to 'select' your model for posing in areas where you've added clothes or accessories.

  • If the lack of regions is causing a crash that is a bug - at worst you should get an error message - so please report this by opening a Technical Support ticket http://www.daz3d.com/help/help-contact-us

Hey Richard, I will report this. I only found out the problem/solution by pure luck.

  • Thank you.

  • Thank you Mythcons, you saved me.
