what's causing the tear mesh to not follow a loaded morph?

What I did:
- export figure as obj
- modeled eye shape
- exported to obj
- morph loader pro, reverse deformations=yes
- dialed in the new morph
- profit
except now the eyelashes and the tears are off. all I did was set them invisible before exporting. the morph has no other changes, just a little geometry editing around the eyes.

after some tooling around, I "solved" this but it is not making much sense.
I'm glad it works but why?
