    Sandstorm by sevenstyles     video here
TIP: Watch the video around 12:50 on to see how to erase the particles you don't want.

This is out of the box. Tested lowering the opacity for the brush strokes to see if it softened the effects (aka, blending in toward the gal's middle) and you don't want to do that. Just makes blurs that don't seem to go with the rest of it.

Note- try to avoid overly patterned clothes, as you can see, it just seems to pull / blur the pattern. Doesn't look as good as the other sand.

For the Contrast Layer, it is set to Hard Light. Try Pin Light and see if you like the lighting change of direction. Several others look good too. If you are going to tweak anything, I'd start with the Contrast Layer.

I also tried skipping a bit of her outline, but those areas just looked too stark.

Fury deserves a look, as it is SO easy to customize.  Here's the video, it is really important to watch if you're considering Fury, it will show you what you can do. So I thought I'd show you what he's talking about in the video. First the out of the box. Then there's boost whiteness, erasing some of the particles, smoke, lines, then with sharpen turned back on.

It's important with this plug in (and got me thinking about other ones too) to turn off a layer if it is a sharpen layer. Apparently it leaves traces of anything moved.  So if you're moving smoke, particles, etc from this plug in or any others, you may be leaving "ghosts" of what you moved.

Open each (they will do a separate window) and click through to see the changes.

    ORIGINAL

TIP:  Don't rely on the color/saturation by the vendor, use a brush and set the opacity to about 15-25% and add color back to areas which are washed out (meaning you aren't removing any detail, just adding color back.)  I added a pale orange/skin tone to the left side of her face (left as we are looking at it, after increasing the white as shown in the video. Notice I removed a lot of the shadow from her face and got more detail back (philtrum) under her nose.)

Here's some renders of a self portrait done with Fury and Photo To Paint, then combined. I was curious to see how real-life hair would look.

Next up is Abstract Photoshop Action by sevenstyles.  Here's the video. However, DON'T BUY IT. It freezes up at the same place for everyone, I have done it three times at over an hour on the last try, then read the comments on the product page and it is common. I will explore it further but I left a comment stating it was unacceptable for the vendor to keep having people email him, when we all have the same problem.

Dust Storm Photoshop Action (UnicDesign) on Graphic River (Envato)         Product Number 18711304
    Video on YouTube

I am going to be using this same render to test all the plugins.

My first question on any of the plugins is: How easy is this to use?
I give this one a thumbs up. You could even start with this if you've never done a plugin.  The product page will show you all the extreme outcomes, I tested for a moderate look.
If things don't work right, check these simple things first:

    1. This plugin has a Background (note the capital B) and brush (all lowercase.)
    2. Be sure you are on brush when you start the plugin
    3. Render size- 2,000px or more on both dimensions is recommended
    4. RGB and 8 bit (found under Image- Mode)
    5. resolution 72-300 dpi (I use 300)
    6. I use a soft, round brush to do the mask. Make sure you used 100% opacity

    My notes for me-
For any of the folders, fiddle with opacity and see what it does.
Folder Noise: the opacity just makes the fog lighter
Folder Dust- is the bokeh circles. If you use black you can erase them. Change your opacity of your brush to erase or darken.

If you use Ctrl + Alt and click drag on the canvas, it duplicates that area. So you can easily make more bokeh bubbles that way. I undid the link between the Layer Thumbnail (first square) and Layer Mask Thumbnail (second square.)  You can also right click over the layer in the list and select Duplicate Layer.

Under Subject Folder, Reveal Details- you can use white to brighten (I used the first thumbnail, and unclicked the link in the middle. I need someone to tell me what that link does, and if I should be unlinking when I use either Black or White. I don't know what I'm doing!)

On Main Subject, my Dust Storm brush was 90% opacity, 160-165 spacing, and 157px  to do the best bokeh bubbles. Remember this brush for other renders, it makes nice bokehs.

Main Light- it is on normal, try multiply to darken and show bokehs.

Color Looks folder  Has FORTY different options for overlays to change the tint. Combine and have fun. There are a few half and half, like number 17, which is half green, half purple, and number 12 which is half red and half blue!

Bottom line- remember to test opacity on all the different folder options, and the "Kind."  (Normal, Soft Light, etc)

The render has noise / dust in the air, it is deliberate :)

That looks really good!  It gives it a gritty look.  I love photoshop filters and will have to read through all the past posts regarding plugins.

All Photoshop actions and filters shown here really awesome

One tip for anyone who doing Photoshop "Paint or Toon Like Actions" ,  try use  history brush tool to blend between Fully Toon/Paint FX and Image source .

Especially in area like eyes - lip - fingers or some important patern in cloth or props which Oil Paints Filter sometimes feel too much

I see a lot of references to Envato products and was considering a subscription to Envato Elements (vice buying individual products.)  For $16.50/mo (based on yearly subscripption) amd unlimited downloads, it seems almost too good to be true.  I was wondering if anyone following this (excellent) thread who has/had a asubscription could share their experiences either within this thread or via PM.  All input appreciated....

Question on Envato Elements- if you are not subscribed, does Envato Elements freeze your downloaded assets? In other words, the Photoshop Plug-ins. I have the subscription (the 9.99 one, well worth it) to Photoshop and if I am not subscribed, it doesn't work. So those of you using Elements, I understand you can download as many as you want and the downloads/history are in your account- but if you are not subscribed, do the ones you ALREADY DOWNLOADED still work in Photoshop?

HeavyRay and I have been comparing who is available and who isn't in the Elements, and some of my favorite vendors are not. If they are, some of their stuff isn't available. Also, in the regular Envato (Graphics River) my vendors have YouTube tutorials which are invaluable and they're sometimes on the product pages, IIRC. I'd be happy to list what I own, but other than what I've rendered and shared, can't recommend or not, as I don't have time to piddle at all. Having to download ALL my products due to stupidly knocking off the external hard drive. It's okay, I'm making folders for each one this time (yeah, over 23,000 of them) and categorizing them. It's actually been quite fun, but no Photoshop Playtime for me LOL. I'll relay what I own in another post. Anyone else have recommendations on Photoshop plug-ins, feel free to share :)

Since we're not allowed to do commercial links, I had to take the link out of the titles. But go to graphicriver.net and just copy/paste these titles. These are from my download page, from many years of collecting. :)  Remember, products get pulled. I have quite a few "no longer available." (not shown) Fortunately, I made a copy on my computer, and not just my external drive that I lost :)

You can see if the subscription is worth it / if these are included, to get a feel and compare the buy-it-outright or subscription route.

From the way I read Envato's cancellation policy and subscription policy you are to stop using items except for on the original project but im not sure how that applys to actions as such. I shyed away from thier site for that very reason, I don't need any issues and its hard enough to keep up with all the legal stuff when it comes to props and things.  I really don't understand thier lingo to be honest.

Ive emailed them to see what they say, looks like if you buy straight from the Market place you get to retain that item but not from Elements.  Will let you know when I hear back.

Realistic Sketch Photoshop Action by denis154        YouTube video found here

From the list above, I finally managed to putz with my purchases. (Had to deal with Hurricane Sally, then prep for Hurricane Delta which didn't come to Pensacola, thank goodness.)  This plug-in features a cartoony, grainy appearance. I'm going to show you the original result, then the tweaked.

One thing the video does NOT mention- be sure your image is a .jpg
Observations about this plug-in   It is EASY and good for beginners. That video is very straightforward, and you easily adjust the vibrancy and hues.
Suggestions: Also test the settings, if the effect is "Normal" try "Harden" or "Multiply" etc (It's right under the area which has Layers, Channels, Panels tabs)

First the original render. I wanted to test an indoor, shadowy scene.

Now the results when you hit "Play" and the starting point for whatever you want to tweak. It has a lot of vibrancy and saturation.

This is the tweaked, like the video shows you. You adjust the opacity with the slider, and the hue and saturation slider make a huge difference.

Here's a second one with the default and the tweaked. I am finding it difficult to get the yellow into the scene, you can do that in postwork with filters.

Grand Trend Art         Product 22862685  (Envato-Graphic River)        YouTube video found here

    Here's some immediate notes:
*you can change the width of the dark line around the figures/props (thin to wide. Shown is medium.)
*you can change the color of the highlights/ lighter area. Note her right arm, it looks grayish-green in the original, I hued it to more skin tone
*not shown, but this comes with interesting frames. The video will show you.
*this one is quite different- note the first layer is "image" with a small "i" and the second layer is "subject" with a small "s"
*make sure "subject" layer is selected when you play the action

This plug-in has a lot more options frankly than Realistic Sketch Photoshop Action. That one is also more grainy and jagged. Grand Trend Art has the options to adjust midtones, shadows, and highlights, has 15 overall color effects (which simply means tinting the entire thing a color such as blue, green, red, etc.)

TIP: One thing I really, really like is the gradient options for the light. Note I changed mine so the light is brighter on our left, which is where the sun was coming from in the render.  You'll find that in Overall Gradient Fill, change the angle to 163.16 to do the sun coming from our left. Try Diamond and Linear for the style while you're in that section.

Here's the original. Yikes, talk about purple! (and that gray arm)  Only the gal, drinks and tray, and rocks were masked to receive the effects.

Here's the tweaked version- done completely in the plug-in with the exception of light blue added to the water. It was pretty gray. Again, this plug-in is easy to use.  I tweaked shadows, midtones, highlights, light gradient, highlight color, etc.

This is what was masked, and how I did the hair. It's interesting to see how that turned out.  I didn't do any postwork to connect the strands so you could see the results.

Don't just mask, go in with a small brush and add those wisps!

The YouTube video linked in the ReadMe didn't go to an instructional video, it was promotional. There may be another one, but just read the included ReadMe and it's simple.
I really like this plug-in, you can get black and white or colorize the result. The results can be tweaked from there.

    Observations:
The first layer must be Background (capital B) and your image 2000 to 4000 pixel range.
The second layer is brush with a small b.
SS-6 really makes a difference around the eye area.
You have the option to turn off the black outline. (I didn't)
You can expand the color options, which means you'll get a light flesh color OUTSIDE of the head bleeding into the background, same with the blue dress.
Enjoy! I highly recommend this one. Easy to use, great results IMO.

    Original result, no tweaking.

This is just turning on the Colorize option, no tweaking.

This is turning on and off the Subject Sketch and playing around with options.

A filter I felt need some recognition is the Camera Raw Filter.  This might be a already known filter and im just late to the game. I do not know exactly when this was added to Photoshop but I am sure glad they did!  I "discovered" this filter trying to figure out the best way to sharpen and remove noise. It does a whole list of things and you can do auto/manual/b&w; I sometimes manually adjust everything and and sometimes I hit the auto button then manually adjust from there. As far as the denoising goes it does a pretty good job but the Intel Denoiser still works better on very noisy images. (I do not have Topaz Denoiser so I can not compare that one)

Backstory (If your interested): I have used Paint Shop Pro for years and have always had Photoshop in some version.  I now pay for a subscription to Photoshop Creative Cloud and decided I was going to force myself to learn Photoshop and use it more since I pay for it. I find it easier to use now than it used to be.

All customization of this image is done in Camera Raw Filter.  The completely unedited version can be viewed on my flickr site under xDS Originals.

This is the posted version with only some modifications to the image.

Thanks @Novica for keeping this going. I picked up "Realistic Sketch Photoshop Action" by denis154. I just sent him a message to see if he has updated instructions for CC 2020+, because Adobe changed the way they store and use Patterns. If/when he writes back, I'll post the updated instructions here.

@Daventaki that is very cool, especially with just being able to use the Camera Raw Filter!

@daventaki   Very nice!  I hardly ever use Photoshop, have to confess. I am a Corel gal (Photo Paint)  It's got a neat all-in-one-place for midtones, shadows, highlights, saturation, color temperature, contrast, saturation, etc. (all sliders)  So I'm basically a plug-in person for Photoshop. :)

@dawnblade   You're very welcome. One I just bought yesterday was Sketch Mix by AB-Designs. That vendor is really good. Check that one out, you get black and white and color areas combined. I've been playing with it and will post later (headed out to do yardwork before it gets in the 80's today. At 9:20am it's already headed there, with humidity. UGH. But no hurricanes!)

This is Sketch Mix    (again, Envato/Graphic River)               YouTube Video

You can change the color, vibrancy, contrast, etc very easily of both the gray area and the color areas. After it finished, in postwork I blended in the lower dress a bit by blending gray into the blue-green. I added a teeny bit of flesh color to the right arm which was grayed out.

You can change all the smudges too (make darker, lighter, turn them off.)  You can also change the tint of the entire background, I did blue-green.
Tip: watch the video for an easy method of masking and selecting pixels. :)

Honestly, you could use this one just to make interesting backgrounds

@Novica That's a beautiful result! I definitely want to check that one out.

Thanks!  I found it a bit difficult to figure out what I wanted to select, I tried several approaches. Going 1/2 and 1/2 with the vertical mask worked pretty well. I had curved the mask with the flow of the bottom half of the dress and that worked well too, but I can't find where I saved that result to LOL. I think this plug-in would work best with scenes where people and props can be colorized, although people work fine too. Appreciate the compliment.

I got a quick reply from denis154 about installing patterns in Photoshop CC-2020+, for the "Realistic Sketch Photoshop Action" (or any action that uses patterns in recent PS versions):

    1. In Photoshop open the Patterns Panel (Window > Patterns)
    2. Open the fly-out menu and choose Import Patterns... from the list
    3. Locate your . pat file on your hard drive
    4. Click Open to install.

Rainy Day Photoshop Action by denis154          YouTube Video

Although the video shows the ability to click and move the droplets around, clicking on the layer moved entire panes (meaning 100% of the coverage) and not small sections.

Do note in the Color Settings, the Color Balance has a drop down for midtones, shadows, and hightlights. You can tweak all three.
Vibrance is set on normal, pin light and soft light are very pretty too.
TIP: turn off Brush-eky for a soft effect and no rain, adjust the colors and you have a pretty portrait with soft edges. This plug-in is great for renders without rain!

This is my final result.  All tweaks done IN the plug-in.

Compare that to the initial output. Yikes! Go vibrancy!

    This is the initial result.

And these are all just turning things off and on.

This turned on two additional layers of rain- the huge ones and the small ones all over the face. (You could also turn these on and turn all the others off.)

This one blurs her more, has the intial vibrancy.

I didn't have any problems with doing Edit>Presets>Preset Manager then choosing Patterns. At least I don't think I did LOL. No error messages came up when the plug-in was going. I've got the subscription Photoshop and assume I'm on the latest version.

Preset Manager only shows Contours and Tools in PS 2021. Patterns were removed. I'm glad it's working for you though!

Huh. Patterns was there for me, in the presets. When I go to Help and About, I have the CC 20.0.6 release.  I do remember reading if you are subscription (which I am) you can actually select which version. I haven't putzed with any updates so I don't know how far back my version is, or what the current one is. Why on earth would they remove patterns?  You're saying that's the 2021, so not sure what that is.

Nebula Photoshop action by fokkira  (Envato)     No video on how to use but there is a Readme included and directions on the product page.

In this I turned off the modified layer of the Warrior which left a black background, I also adjusted the color of the stars to make it all more neutral in color.  Then I flattened that group and used it as an overlay on the original image.

Images have been resized original size images are on my Flickr site.

    Original Action applied before modifications:
