Quick Question about 'Viewport'.....

Hello again guys....

I was trying to figure out what the little tick and cross markers are for in - Viewport, when you go into the 'scene' menu on the left, there is the list of all the items showing in your scene and right next to the 'eye' icon there is a small tick or small cross. Can anyone tell me what these do please because I have some items that are showing a tick and others that show a cross and I'm not sure what this is supposed to activate/de-activate.

It makes an item unselectable if it is cross, selectable if it is a tick mark.
