RIP Al Jaffe
...on Monday, the pioneering comic artist cartoonist for Mad Magazine Al Jaffee passed on at age 102. He is best known for a number of cartoons published by the magazine as well as the inventor of the "Mad Fold In" which when folded created a different picture and answer to the question stated on the bottom.
Jaffee holds the record for the longest career in cartooning beginning in the late 1930s spanning over 80 years unto until his retirement in 2020 at age 99. He was never a full time staff member at Mad, instead remaining a freelance artist all his life. In the early years of his career worked for Stan Lee and during WWI, for the government creating posters and pamphlets for the war effort,
He had notable fans including the legendary creator of the Peanuts gang, Charles M. Schultz, Farside cartoonist Gary Larson, and comedians Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. When Stewart and the Daily Show writers wrote their best seller America (The Book), Jaffee created a "fold in" for it
He was quoted in the New York Times in an article on his retirement as saying “I had two jobs all my life. One of them was to make a living. The second one was to entertain. I hope to some extent that I succeeded.”:

Daaaaang.
RIP to a real one.
Oh wow, to live such a long time and doing what you love for so long. He will be missed.
Condolences. I remember seeing a MAD magazine in the 70s and I did not like it, wasn't interested in it, I was breaking the rules to buy the one issue I did buy, but I did like the Spy vs Spy characters in it though.
...two of my favourties were Don Martin's cartoons and Dave Berg's "Lighter Side" feature.
MAD forever!
Retired at 99. GOOD LORD. Well I've always said I'll be working till I pass away. He's a prime example of that sort of mind set! LOL Rest well Al. Thanks for the maddness!
