Iray to 3DL for G9?

G3 was only the current figure for something like 2 years. G8 was current for something like 4. But it used what was basically the same UVs as G3, so we basically got a half-dozen years where skins were pretty much interchangable. Over that period Iray became more and more the norm. But people still used 3DL and there were character converters that went both ways.

G8.1 had a new UV, and DAZ character bases no longer shipped with a 3DL option. But G8.1 came with the option to use the base G8 UV so  You could get a 3DL-compliant skin onto them.

G9 broke the mould. That is not a G8-compliant UV. Is anyone updating the Iray to 3DL convertors for G9? Conversely, is there a process for changing the materials to 3DL oneself?

The UV is fine. It is just the shader. There is a process for changing the shaders being used but your results may vary. I have a shader that I set up from an existing item that sets it as the Daz default shader (no materials) and you can then apply that to the surfaces of the G9.

And where is this, or the instructions, to be found? Or would one simply apply the 3DL shaders used for props and hope for the best?

I used the "Grey Shader" 3DL by SpyyroRue on DeviantArt ,to replace the textures on G9 ,then manually replaced the textures and adjusted them.....then saved them when I was happy

It is a bit of the apply something from a previous generation and hope for the best. Here is my quick walkthrough:

    • Load Genesis (just happened to be the one I picked)
    • Select a surface (I picked arm)
    • Save a shader. I called mine DS Default
    • Load a G9 character
    • Select the character
    • Apply the shader and with the Control key (I think, I am on a Mac) tell it to ignore the maps when the dialog pops up.
    • Apply lights and render
    • Tweak as needed

No great work of art but here is Nikolai in a couple of minutes with 3DL.
