DIM can't see installed files?

Okay, I've had a very odd thing happen. I asked the DIM to download products last night, let it run while I did something else non-DAZ related. When it finished, I was going to open Studio to get things in categories--only Studio was entirely uninstalled. I reinstalled it, and found my categories were gone. As I looked further, a number of products had disappeared from my library. I re-opened the DIM to see what it showed and saw that it listed all but 4 products as ready to either install or download. Even the items studio could see were marked ready to download or install--and weirder, about half the items were actually gone from my hard drive.

So I restored the items from my backup, thinking that would solve things. I also reinstalled the PostGre SQL and that got my categories and products back in Studio, but DIM still thinks they're gone. I've checked and the XML files are where they should be. Some of the ZIP files are there, and those are the items DIM says are ready to install--it knows the ZIPs are in the folder, but seems to be ignoring the XML files.

I appreciate any thoughts on how to get this sorted. I suppose I could reinstall everything, but that seems a bit weird, being as they are installed. Let me know if there's helpful information I can provide. I'm on Win 10, if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance.

When DIM installs a product it creates a .dsx file for the product in the ManifestFiles folder, which by default is in C:\Users\Public\Documents\DAZ 3D\InstallManager.  Do you still have those files?

  • I have about 3/4 of them--definitely more than the 4 DIM knows are installed. Now I don't have mine in the defaul location--my C is a small solid state drive so I have all my products installed on E. I've double-checked DIM and it hasn't forgotten that--but do you think it could be looking in the C location anyway?

Make sure you're looking at the ManifestFiles folder, not the Downloads folder.

  • Yep, that was in the Manifest files folder. The Downloads folder has everything, so far as I've seen, plus the zip files for the ready to be installed items (which are actually already installed).

Beyond this problem with the DIM being annoying, it's really baffling that downloading products not only deleted most of my existing products from my drive, but deleted Studio as well.

I have never heard of that happening in any version of DAZ Studio, it really isn't possible.    What makes you think that DIM deleted previously installed content, and how could it delete DAZ Studio, they are in two different places.    I think you need to explain a bit more fully.

Very strange that DS got uninstalled and most of the ManifestFiles are gone.  Have you checked your hard drive for problems?

  • Well, this is what happened: I was using Studio and decided to download some of the new content I'd purchased over the last week or so. I closed Studio and opened the DIM. I asked the DIM to download new products (clicked the add all check box in the upper left corner and clicked Start Queu). I left it running while I did other things, mostly away from the computer. When I came back and saw it had finished, I clicked my shortcut to open Studio. Windows 10 said the shortcut was linked to an app that no longer was available. I looked on the harddrive, and sure enough, DAZ studio was no longer installed. I re-opened DIM to re-install Studio, befuddled as to what could have happened, since the only other thing I'd done on this computer during DIM's downloads was look at my feedreader. On opening the DIM, I saw 3000+ products not installed--Studio being one of them. I re-installed Studio and opened it to see what it looked like. My categories were gone but about half of my DAZ products were still installed, according to Studio, but not the DIM. Everything not in the DAZ directory was still there (things from other stores or freebies, which I created separate libraries for). I checked my harddrive for the missing content--it was actually not there, so I copied the missing files back from by backup drive. Studio can now see those items again, but the DIM insists these things are not downloaded or installed, in spite of many of them having Manifest files. It knows the ZIP files are there in the Downloads folder, but seems to be ignoring the Manifests, some few of which (about a quarter) are actually missing.

That's pretty much all I know of what happened--DIM never gave me an error or any sign that something was odd about the downloads, but when I went to open Studio (which had worked fine previously) it was uninstalled. Since the only thing I was doing on this computer at that time was downloading from the DIM, it seems to be connected. I agree it's weird--it has never occurred to me to worry that the DIM might uninstall something  when asked to install something else. I never even navigated to the Installed tab, so I'm very confused.
