Good Magic Orb Products

Hi all!

I was wondering if anyone could identify the magic orbs used in the promos for https://www.daz3d.com/magical-arts-dforce-outfit-for-genesis-81-females and in https://www.daz3d.com/magic-room.

I have attached the relevant promo images (hopefully, if they don't get stripped off my post again)

I'm looking for high quality orbs like those used in the promos that will work in Iray. I find a few older things and some brushes, but I'm not after brushes, but rather something that will be added to the scene so I can make the most of emissives.

Thanks.

Not the ones from your examples but maybe interesting for you:

  • Hi Hylas,

Thanks for the suggestion! I have this one already bookmarked, but I appreciate the input. :)

Hopefully someone will recognise the props used in the promos so I have more variety :)

I checked out my collection and this is a new product that has an etheral orb which is very nice.

    And then this one: https://www.daz3d.com/technomancer-props-poses-and-expressions-for-genesis-8

There is one product that is no longer sold, Orbis Magicae by MortemVetus that was very old but had interesting orbs.

This has a simple orb with a few material options: https://www.daz3d.com/z-wicked-sorcery--prop-poses-and-expressions-for-genesis-8-female-and-mabel-8

Although I collect magical effects props, it is funny how few come with 'orbs' specified in the promos.

  • Hi Mary!

Thanks very much for the input!
I have the SBibb pack in my wishlist, as it looks very interesting! The Technomancer pack is also pretty close to what the promos use, but not quite.

I love the Orbis Magicae pack! I don't think it should be too hard to give those orbs a facelift to make them play nice in DS with Iray.

I'm finding it a bit annoying that these orbs used in the promos, if not included in the packs themselves, aren't listed in the credits. It's really hit and miss what products are included in the credits for promos, which is a real shame and means threads like this one will never become redundant.

Doesn't look to match either promo, but SY Marvelous Magic includes a magic orb. Could perhaps substitute if the promo items aren't identified.

Maybe not exact but these look fairly close: https://www.renderosity.com/marketplace/products/101109/spell-orbs

If I wanted to make an orb like that, I'd just use a sphere primitive, give it an emissive shader, and some suitable swirly smoky black & white image in the cutout opacity channel. Maybe there isn't a product at all?

a spherical mapped design with emissions or circular designs on overlapping circles or planes should work too, I often do my own or borrow something

you often can use the same image for cutout opacity if the background is black or not depending on the look you want

  • Thanks for all the helpful suggestions, guys! I really appreciate it!

I know from my own research and also the helpful suggestions that there are some good products around, so that's a huge help. So far, the products used haven't been identified, but these are some great alternatives.

Furthermore, I know I'll be able to make my own. I could probably make some kind of tileable texture in Filter Forge that I could use for the surface of the sphere, but that's a bit more involved when at the moment I'm just looking for a quick 'n' dirty option of something premade in my asset library. After a long hiatus from art and family issues, I don't want anything too involved for my first project out of the gates, so I'd like to keep the custom work to a minimum. It wouldn't be too hard to UV map a sphere, make a texture and create the shader in DS to get the look I'm after, but even those few extra hoops are beyond me at the moment. Adding assets from my library is a much gentler way to ease back into working. :)

I'm still hoping someone will come through with the identity of the orbs used, but in the meantime, there are some great options here. Thanks everyone!

You wouldn't have to create a sphere and UV map it. You can just load one of the DAZ Primitives (create > new primitive) --specifically the sphere-- and apply a shader to that.

Not sure about the original images.  The shaders from this set may also work on a sphere to get an effect you desire:

PTF Magic! Shaders and Wearables for Genesis 3 and 8

As long as you set the displacement values to 0.

Also check out PixelTizzyFit's Portals collection.  Not sure how (or if) the shaders there will work on a sphere.

Yes, this is very true, FenixPhoenix! I realised this after I logged off. The basic primative would work fine until I wanted to modify the shape of a sphere or add bands circling it for added detail. :)

Another user mentioned this pack, but it's such an awesome pack that it deserves to be mentioned multiple times.

Some displacement would look pretty cool, IMO. Adding some surface variation would give some dimension, rather than a perfectly smooth sphere, which might look a little funny.

I'm not sure how the portals would look on a sphere either. Depending how they're put together, they may look a bit funny, but it doesn't matter. The Magic! shaders will get the job done. :)

Thanks for all the input guys!
