Half Braid Half Tail Hairstyle

(reference images ((plus my personal attempt lol)) are attached below)

If any hair specialist PAs are interested in a fairly unique style idea, I've always been searching for one like Gemma Arterton's halfway braided hairstyle from "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" (2013).

The specific hair structure is a long semi-braided style that is drawn back over the ears into a large, dense braid which transitions about halfway down into a wild, messy tail. Ideally, the braid would be articulated so that it could be posed over the shoulder and fully animated. I'm entirely using G8.1F if that's of interest.

A while ago while trying to convert Daz products into Blender, I made an attempt at splicing together the Kent Hair by Ergou and a braid segment from Lori Hair by Lady Littlefox (see the last three images attached). If any concept of my half-braid attempt is halfway useful, feel free to adapt it as you wish!

this outoftouch 3in1 has all the elements though not exactly. might be able to merge the various parts together,  given they all use the same textures.

Thanks for that suggestion! Seems like a viable option and outoftouch is great.

So, those braids and tails are separate, modular objects parented to the main hair? (As it is with the mega updo hair set that I do have?) As you mentioned, that could work for me. I may be able to attach one of the larger tails to the end of a shorter braid and attach that to whatever base hair looks best. That might be well enough, at least on par with my scuffed version.

Looking at the pictures of the hair you are trying to duplicate, a braid that is unraveling, I would love one too. So often a braid can come undone, add in extreme action, a loose tie/clip, and there you go, you have a mess in the making. So if @outoftouch wants to add to their line of those 3-in-one hairs, I would buy it in a hot minute.

Have a look at Mihrelle's Messy Hair Bundle; there is one style which is very similar to your reference photos: https://www.daz3d.com/mrl-messy-hair-bundle

    Thanks, for the response!

While it seems a good hair pack, I'm not sure if you mean the "long braid" from pack 1 (of which the tail is way too short) or the "ponytail" from pack 2 (which has no braid). As with the Outoftouch bundle, if the braids and tails are modular, then it may possible to kit-bash the elements into something closer.

I really appreciate the help anyway though!

I thought I'd share that I decided to go ahead and get the OOT 3-in-1 pack while it was on sale. Since I didn't have a fully centered single braid (just the perrin braid which is off center), it should be really useful as it naturally is even if it doesn't work as a half-braid in action.

Attached below is a a quick test render.

If anyone's curious it's the braid version, scaled shorter and thicker through both morphs and parameters, the default tail hidden, and a full tail from a separate instance attached to the last bone. It's not perfect, but I've made far worse with far greater effort. Some of the movement morphs for the shifted tail may be warped though. I'd definitely still love to get a full half-braid style similar to the reference images in my original post.

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions and feedback everyone! I'm very happy to have a variation of the idea I may now use moving forward.

Here's another test. Tried the other curly tail, replaced the base with Kent hair, hid the tail, and tried to get the surface settings similar enough. It looks a bit closer to my reference; however, it's a lot more work to setup, and while I love the look, the warped movement morphs on the tail are a notable detraction.
