    Lots of people who I used to watch on TV back in my childhood are passing on lately. Very strange feeling.
    Here's one who's voice and rhythms showed me some great alternatives to the music my parents listened to;-) Opened my eyes, I could say.
    And, in spite of my Dad's deep love of mostly classical music, he did speak highly of Harry Belafonte's style... while he ridiculed other music of the 50s and 60s. It was hard to break through my Dad's tastes, so I took this as proof of Belafonte's talent.

    Such an amazing human being. If you ever get a chance, look up the documentary they did of the week he filled in for Johnny Carson. Among the amazing guests, he interviewed both Martin Luther King Jr and Robert F Kennedy not long before both were taken from us.

    I saw that last year. Thanks for reminding me. Like Harry Truman said: "The only thing new in this world is the history you don't know."

    No one has mentioned this here, but he was also a member of the Greatest Generation and volunteered for the Navy, fighting in the Pacific.
