Quick Question about Photoshop CC brushes

I am looking at getting the latest pack of them from today, but it says for PS CC. I have version 24.1.1. Will they work? Sorry to ask but I want to make sure I am good with it.

CC means Creative Cloud and so this is just to indicate that they don't work (or are atleast untested) on CS6 and below. Version 24 is an unpatched version of Photoshop Creative Cloud 2023 - 24.4.1 seems to be out now so if it doesn't work you can just install the update.

  • Ok, thanks.

I'm having issues with older brushes not installing into Photoshop through DIM because they were created pre-CC and have to be manually installed because for some reason DIM refuses to install them into newer versions of PS. And every time Photoshop updates to a new version, you have to reinstall them again (or copy brushes over manually) which is a big pain.

I don't know about older brush packs as I think the oldest one I have is from 2015 so a few years after CC was launched; But I can see that within DIM you do have to specify the Application path to Photoshop - thus given this path changes on each major version then you'd have to remember to update that each year - for instance it currently needs to be set to "Adobe Photoshop 2023" within the location where your applications are installed. I am less familiar with Photoshop but with InDesign the installer does copy across the contents of the scripts folder when it installs the new major version so not sure if Adobe does this with Photoshop Brushes folders also.

Also, as I have just found out today, some change in the permissions of Mac OSX have meant that DIM was no longer able to install certain things to certain places. I had to go into the security settings and give the DIMHelper specific permissions to write to folders - for some reason this was not being granted by the authentication prompt as it has always done in the past. Therefore, since brushes are installed to a "protected location" you may need to do this also in order for DIM to install application updates, plugins or Photoshop brushes/styles. I think there is something similar on Windows as DIM could not install the beta for me there either but I have not yet looked into where that setting would be.

I keep all my Photoshop brushes in one central location on a separate drive where I can just load them into Photoshop from the "import brushes" menu directly in Photoshop. Nice n' easy.

I do the same and still use brushes I bought/made in CS3 in Photoshop 2023. It never occured to me to try and use the DIM for this.

Why would anyone use DIM for instaling into Photoshop?

I keep all extra PS brushes and patterns in a custom location for importing. I don't keep anything in PS directories precisely because PS updates and different versions can mess with it.

Edit: regarding the OP - new PS versions can use old brushes, but the reverse is not true.

Yeah, same here. I have a 'Photoshop Resources' folder set up on a separate drive where I drop all my brushes, styles, and pretty much anything I might want to use as an overlay, etc. Everything in one place and easy to find.

This is helpful advice. I had DIM installing into Paint Shop Pro on my Win 10s, and decided to let it do it to GIMP on my MacBook Pro M1, but trying to use the brushes seemed like such a struggle that I just gave up. I will try another external drive and see what happens and if I can get over my frustration with brushes. (Of course that never stopped me from buying the brushes.)
