we couldn't complete the updates

I've seen a few threads mentioning Windows 10 and Daz problems, but those are so very technical, my eyes cross and can glean nothing that makes sense to someone like me.
Windows 8 came with my Alienware, which soon updated to 8.1. Somewhere along the way, the following error started occurring during updates:
we couldn't complete the updates
I sit through 30 minutes or more of it trying to update, then it restarts, then it tells me it can't update, then it sits there and undoes all it tried to do. An hour or more has gone by before I am actually able to work, just for the cycle to happen again in a couple days.
Does anyone have a solution? Is upgrading to windows 10 a solution? Will it hurt my Daz 4.7? Is it even possible with this update loop?
Any help with be appreciated.

As far as I know you need to have Windows 7/8/8.1 up to date in order to use the Windows 10 upgrade, so you need probably to solve the updater issue first.
I have 8.1, it just doesn't want to do the regular updates. But also, how is windows 10 with Daz 4.7?
Yes, but I meant you need (I have been told) to have all the 8.1 updates.
The only issues I have seen with DS in Windows 10 have been systems with mutliple nVidia cards not taking proper advantage of them under Iray, but there have been updates from both MS and nVidia so I don't know if that is still an issue.
OK ... Well I don't want the new Daz yet, anyway, so if it's only an Iray issue, that isn't a problem. However, windows 8.1 not updating properly is a problem. Any ideas?
Go online to microsoft and do your updates. Do not do it from windows if it is not updating. Also, check your virus software to see if it recently quarantined a file. Undo that if possible. Or try a repair or last good snapshot of your system (restore point).
Oh maybe it is trying to update to windows 10 if you got the notification and for some reason on your machine it cannot yet update. Look to see if that is happening in your action center updates. Uncheck the windows 10 update and see if there are other updates. Also, check for updates from the manufacturer of your computer.
