2023 Memorial Day Weekend Sales - Share Your Renders!

I always enjoy the DAZ+ Sale Render Contest thread, where we all get to try out and actually use the stuff we bought during the sale. It's great to see all the renders everyone creates. There's plenty of us who bought a lot during the Memorial Day weekend sales. I thought it'd be fun to have a render thread for the big holiday sales events and do something similar!

So, it would be great when we try out some of our stuff from the Memorial Day weekend sales, to share our renders here. They don't need to be anything fancy and could just be us testing our new-to-us items! smiley

Hope you don't mind me tagging a few of you, since I know you all did some shopping too during the weekend! winkIf you try out your new buys, feel to free to post the renders here, and maybe share what you used and liked! @paulawp (marahzen) @PerttiA @tsroemi @SofaCitizen @doubledeviant @joanna @Hylas

It'll take me a little while to unpack my buys, but hopefully I'll join in with at least a few renders and experiments. Have fun! I'd love to see what everyone makes! smileyheart

I can't promise I'll do much, because my poor RTX 2060 takes hours to render anything, but I'll try to throw something in. Hoping to see your renders too!

I would share a couple, but file uploads are still (again) broken in the forum. sad

Aw thanks @joanna and @barbult! heart I'd love to see renders from you both! I was a little afraid that nothing would come of this thread and I thought I might just have to ask Richard to delete it... blush

Oh no! I can't believe file uploads are down again! BOO! surprise

I just did a quick attempt using LineRender9000 which I noticed you got too, Joanna. I was curious how practical it'd be to use. I'd never tried a 3Delight render before. It was an interesting experiment, but no way to share it right now I guess... I think I should see if there's a thread about how to use it in the Art Studio pages too and educate myself! wink (Just a question @joanna - I'm always way too curious - do you make the covers for your books yourself? They look great!)

I haven't tried LineRender yet, but before purchasing, I've read on some threads and it looks like it's ok to make your work regularly in iray (though emissives and few other things won't translate), and then just render what you need in 3Delight (I've never used it either :) ). From what I understand, you could render line render in 3Delight, and then just render the scene in iray and overlay the two in postproduction. If you find anything interesting (or a tutorial for dummies, lol).

And thank you! I'm very happy with the covers, but no, I didn't make them. I published my first series before I even made first steps in DAZ, so I hired a cover designer with a lot of experience. He does work with DAZ, but from what I've seen of his process, he renders most elements separately and then composites them into cover art in Photoshop.

By the way, I have a render for this thread (nothing special, but it showcases a bit of what I bought), so now I'm just waiting for the upload to start working again.

  • I should be ready to roll in the morning. Today was full of errands, including running the art computer over to the shop for a cleaning. Tomorrow looks wide open ...

@miladyderyni_173d399f47 Hope you feel better soon! Look forward to seeing your ideas brought to life!

@joanna I used LineRender exactly like that in my quick experiment and layered it with the Iray render. It was just a quick test, so I need to read up on it.

Ah I see, well your book covers work great - yup, sometimes it's easier/more flexible to work with multiple separate renders and try and fit them together for the final composition. Well now you're using DAZ, you can have fun envisioning and creating your characters in DS, whether you make future covers yourself or get someone else for it! smiley I'm not sure I remember this right, but were you the one making character cards? That's something I enjoy doing as well.

Great that you already have a render showcasing some of your buys. Yup, that's all this thread is about. Trying, testing, experimenting! yes

    @paulawp (marahzen) Sounds good!!

Uploads seem to be working now?! (For how long I don't know...)

Threads like these get me to at least try out some of my purchases before I forget I got them or put off learning about them to a later date... I got LineRender9000 and Visual Style Shaders and tried them together today. Someone mentioned in the NPR thread in Art Studio that the Visual Style Shaders worked with Iray too - that was what I needed to know to add it to my cart.

I layered the Iray render of a G2 character for Keiko with a few of the LineRender outputs (Two-tone and Lines are in the attachments. There was also an Outline one.). And I made use of the Visual Style Shaders for the hair and dress.

I was hoping outline renders would be a single clean and fast render, so I might try animating a sequence in that style. But no, sadly. Layering like this works for single images, but not practical for an animated sequence. sad Otherwise, I do like the style. Not too hard to achieve either. This was done with no reading up of how LineRender works - so I was pleasantly surprised. Visual Style Shaders were super easy to apply and a great simple solution for NPR style renders.yes

I used Invetero (also used the Iray add-on) as a backdrop for this render. Actualy, I first created an HDRI from the Invetero architecture and used that HDRI for this render with G9 in it.

This uses maclean's Everyday Fruit. I rendered it as a thank you to Kindred Arts for giving me the Iray TapeWorx as a prize in his "Case" April Fool's contest.

@barbult Love how natural you posed her and her look and accessories are just right! How did you create the HDRI of Invetero?

Oh gosh, I didn't keep up with the case render contest. Just went and had a look at all the winners. They're fantastic! surprise So is your thank you render. Congratalutions on your win! That Richard is always up to something. Haha! laugh

I finished installing all my buys. Will have to go see what I can test out next...

I made the HDRI with V3D HDR Creator. I bought it in this bundle V3D HDR Master Bundle. If you buy it, be sure to read the tips in the commercial thread. The tip about Nominal Luminance was critical for me to get the best results.

Yes, I can see DAZ having many applications in the future, but I still consider myself being in a learning stage. Yet already, making different renders brings up ideas for stories, so one could say I illustrate some stories before I write them :). And yes, you remember the cards right (unless there was someone else doing them too), and I have learned a lot since then, so they're just going to get better. :)

Ok, I LOVE (yes, I used caps, bold, and color, because!) what you managed to do with this render. It looks wonderful. I don't have Visual Style Shaders yet (they've been on my list forever), but I do have Sketchy - Toon Edge and Art Style Shaders, so I might check how they work with the line render... So much to do, so little time—unfortunately, I have a book to finish, so Daz comes second.

Uploading still doesn't seem to work for me, so I can't upload the picture featuring Urban Sprawl and Orestes HDRI Skydomes - Dreadful Skies. I'll try again tomorrow.

I'm working on some renders which I hope to get uploaded today, Daz foibles permitting.

I, too, have a book to finish but I have let this Daz diversion take over a lot of my free time. (Worse, I have let buying Daz stuff take center stage over - you know - using it; I spend so much time looking at items in the Daz store thinking, "I could totally use that for ...." and I need to spend more time using them for that use I had envisioned after I buy them. But that's a whole other topic.) What kind of book are you working on?

I basically trying to upload every time I respond to this thread, and sometimes in-between tasks as well. Last time the uploads didn't work for me, it sometimes glitched into working if one was persistent enough.

    Go finish that book! :)

I can relate to spending too much time in Daz store, though I found a process that works for me. I usually set up the scene in the evenings, when I'm not working anymore, and then I render it the following morning, doing work or writing while my poor computer mulls over the render. There are weeks when I do quite a few, and weeks when work and writing take the priority. Sometimes, I actually scroll through what I already got and make sure I use it for something. Even if it's just a fun or learning-purposes render.

And the book I'm working at the moment is book 3 of my contemporary fantasy set in Dublin, Ireland (I lived there for 8.5 years, so there's some nostalgia in that story). Book 1 released last month, book 2 is with my alpha reader, and I'm hoping to get the first draft of 3 done before he finishes reading 2. If you're curious, I can only inconspicuously point toward my signature ;). The good part is that once I hit render, rendering and writing can happen at the same time. But to get to that stage...

I am wrapping up the second book in a planned five-book series. This second book is the one that has been delayed by all my Daz adventures; I set a goal to finish it this summer/fall. It's mostly done - at a mere 240,000 words.

The series will never be published or read by anyone. There's not a market or audience for the kind of work I do, so I just write to entertain myself. After some discussion with an online acquaintance who managed to plow through the first chapter of the first book, we decided that it is by definition a fantasy, one which is set in an alternate world which has technology levels that approximate our world in 1940. I hesitate to call it fantasy, as it is entirely populated by ordinary people and animals, governed by real-world physics, but I can't call it alt history, as at no point did it diverge from our world's real history. It never was this world.

After the first few weeks of dabbling with Daz back in the summer of 2021, I bought a dedicated art computer. My production computer - an able companion for running stuff like InDesign, MS Office, and SQL server - was not up for the task, and I literally couldn't write and render at the same time. Now I can, but yeah - all that time spent setting up.

Wow, that's quite a piece. A little more and you could chop it into a trilogy! ;)

As long as you're enjoying writing and you're happy with your story, all is good. There's no obligation to have any work published, and it can be a stressful process too.

I wish I could afford a new PC. Thankfully, adding a bit more RAM had helped me a bit, and what I can't render, I try to do in postwork. :)

I hope that the forum upload will be merciful for you (I'm still trying...), and you'll be able to share your sale renders.

    Wooohooo, it attached!

Ladies, and gents, and otherwise, I present you

    The Urban Crawl

I used Urban Sprawl and Orestes Iray HRDI Skydomes Vol 2 - Dreadful Clouds. No postwork except slight adjustment of levels for punchier shadows. Though, I think, it's worth noting that I used Emission Profile Master for the streetlamps (they don't seem to come with their own light, but I didn't check thoroughly: I wanted specific emission profile anyway).

Urban Sprawl was definitely worth the price (especially that it was a very good sale price): so many pre-made blocks to add variety or to build a massive city. And the skydomes are exactly what I was looking for, giving that dark moody atmosphere without drowning everything in darkness.

Looks like it's working! Here's "Out on the Water" featuring several new things from the holiday weekened ... the 1stb Inland Marina and the PW Ibiza Pleasure Boat, and one of my "instant people" sporting the Tropical Breeze dress (remade with one of the MMX Elegant Fabric Patterns), bracelets from the VRV Claire set and the Nadae Bun.

    Fashion Model Weekend

A couple of good sales this weekend... grabbed a ton of items for 80-90 percent off, and managed to clear quite a bit off of my Wishlist by the time Monday was done.

    This is Sunday's haul:
    Triton Motorcycle
Everyday 2 for G8M (I was in a rush and couldn't get the shirt to look just right... then I remembered it was a model shoot, so no shirts are required for the guys...)
Cute Casual Jacket and Skirt for G8F (I don't think that Casual Fridays every get this casual, but it's perfect Dazwear)
Cozy Sweater Dress Outfit for G3F (Couldn't get the boots to fit right, so Maxine is sporting some re-shaded Incognito boots instead)
    Albert Mansion

A cheap effort? Absolutely. But I was needing ducks for something recently and didn't have any on hand; so I finally picked up the ancient Noggins ducks during this sale. Also, this is one of my new Orestes HDRI sets. I rarely use HDRIs, but if I do, it's for nighttime or an early dawn/late twilight sort of setting, where sun-sky does not shine, figuratively and literally.

@barbult Thanks for information on V3D HDR Creator! I had it in my wishlist - will have to keep an eye on it for a future purchase...

@Blando Calrissian That looks like a proper photo shoot alright! Very cool! Who's your male character in there?

Thanks @joanna! I've not tried out Sketchy much yet, but these Visual Style Shaders were really use to use. I have to find time too to experiment a little more with them.

Ah! That spider is back. Great use of those emissive lights in The Urban Crawl!

@paulawp (marahzen)You managed to try out a lot of things in one render! She's definitely living the high and nice life in Out on the Water!

I also got a lot of Noggin's old birds and things including those ducks! So many scenes that can be made just that tad better with a few of those. Nice render with the Orestes HDRI! And feel free to share more! We all may not have time to leave a comment on everything we showcase here, but it's always enjoyable to see everyone's renders! yes

I'm trying to get one of my animation related purchases working. May take me a minute. But if it wasn't for this thread, I might have put off trying that for a while, so I'm grateful! laugh

Joanna and Paula, there's a lot of us writers in the DAZ community, which is really cool! I work on some kids picture books, but also the occasional YA fantasy. Mostly just for my own satisfaction. It's always nice to check out what everyone is working on. Interesting to read about what you two are working on! Thanks for sharing! But yes, I too suffer from totally being distracted by the DAZ store and sales from working on my projects. It's a little better this year thankfully! smiley

Here's today's new product-testing Face Transfer person, getting ready for a long day of unexpected adventures ... Here he is sporting the Raker Short Hair and the Stellan Lounge outfit with its extra textures - one of the texture sets that I picked up for .36 cents. It's still a peaceful morning here in the Woodman House: Bathroom set.

And what better way to start the day than a nice flight at sunrise? This is the Albatros D.Va WWI Biplane - of Red Baron fame - and the squadron was called the "Flying Circus" in reference to the various, bright and wacky colors that the planes were painted. Our guy here is clad in the Pioneer Airman outfit and providing most of the moody lighting is another of the Orestes HDRIs I bought, this one coming from the Blue Hour set.

Another day, another reality (probably a much worse one, unless our guy was destined to get shot out of the sky in the last render). Here I try out the old, but still amusing Prison Visitors Room and accompanying Visitation For Genesis 2 poses. He is sporting the H&C Prisoner Clothing B set, with the Raker Beard and rather wild Sp Hair 011. His devastated visitor (wife? girlfriend?) is a new test person - we'll see if she turns up again, but here, she has the Rochelle Ponytail Hair and the X-Fashion Autumn Winter Outfit, which I quite like so far.

OK, one more for the day. I constructed the scene to make use of the three NYC-related items I picked up last weekend: New York Street Props, New York Hot Dog Cart, New York Street Lights. The bus stop and trash can are from the Street Props set. I ended up creating this street with five different NYC sets (not new - using New York Stores, Tenements, etc) and threw in today's test guy (here with Dforce Hnc 3button Suit Outfit and Dforce Jason Hair). The hot dog stand guy was newly created today but didn't get a chance to star in anything; he's not wearing anything new. The girl is the same as the one from the jail visitation scene, with Kimi Style outfit and 2021-07 Hair (for what it's worth, as I ended up putting her far enough down the sidewalk you can't see the details anyway). Counting a couple of poses from new sets and that's 10 new products tested in the making of this one image. :)

@paulawp (marahzen) That NYC scene came out great and I can't believe you were able to try out so many new things with it! yes

I got a little busy, but was finally able to test out the Face Mojo animation tool I got. Sadly I didn't realize we also have to buy a face capture app for it. I just used the free 3 second version of that to test out Face Mojo and it was pretty straightforward. I did a quick and random 3 second face animation and kept the renders BW and low resolution to just render it out quickly (just 18 minutes for 90 frames)

It was fun indeed! Thanks everyone! smiley

Maybe there should even be an ongoing "Share your renders of your new buys!" thread... Just for testing, trying things out and having fun experimenting. laugh
