Stupid Terminology Question
Hi, I notice on DAZ when I make what I thought where textures the software preview window has them labeled as material.
So at http://3dk4.com am I making textures or material? What is the correct way to label them?
Thanks
Kimberly

Hi Kimberly,
A texture is a bitmapped picture (usually in jpg or png format, but not always) that is used in a material.
A material contains all data that tells the surface of an object (a material zone) how to act. So it will contain data for Diffuse, Specularity, Opacity, etc, and many of those settings can use a texture file in various ways to augment the details.
Can't think of a better way to explain, but I'm falling asleep so I'm not surprised. Hope it helps.

I kind of get what you are saying, right now I am only using jpg. This page is more of a learning page for me. I try to learn something new each week and I add all my stuff to this page so all my learning stuff won't go to waist. Figure someone might find it useful.
If you are at all doubtful, why not call them styles. So X number of new styles for xyz outfit.
On the other hand I always call mine stuff textures, even though they are set up with bumps and/or displacem, ents, trans maps and sometimes reflection maps. But mine are made for poser and I make them into mat poses. Neil then does an additional set for me which I think are called mats, for DS.
Most of my zip names nowadays start with cho_tex_whatever and include both the poser tex and the DS mat.
