banding

I always get banding (you know - the opposite of smooth colour transition) when I render something close. Also with soft shadows. I have tried various render settings, but nothing helps.

What to do?

See render here:

Could be your light quality settings in the render room, maybe.  Carrara's implementation of soft shadows can sometimes cause banding by themselves too, try upping the quality of those in the assembly room.

  • As far as I can see, there is a shade of grey by facet (triangle heure). Shading should smooth it. It can happen when all edges are creased (see attachment)

What are you trying to render ?

  • Sorry, I didn't look close enough.

Now, I see what you mean by banding. It seems to be caused by too few lights.

I've made some test Adding lights (more distant and/or background lights) and it's less visible (but still present). I've extended the image range to make the bandig more obvisous.

Seems also to be linked to shiness.
