Upgraded Windows... Where might my old files be?

I've finally upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7. Yeah, I know... I'm now a member of the 21st Century!

I made a backup of my old files, plus Microsoft kindly put all of my old files into a Windows.old folder. I have a bunch of my DAZ files installed onto an external drive. I've installed a new version of DAZ Studio onto my PC, but now I'd like to know where the pointer files are in my backups that can show DS where my files are located.

If this has already been discussed elsewhere, I apologize for bringing it up again. Just point me in the right direction and I'll be on my way.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I think you are asking where you set the content directories in Studio?

    if so....

Press F2 or click Edit > Preferences on the top toolbar.

On the Prefrences menu click the Content Library tab, at the bottom of that tab click the big button that says "Content Directory Manager"

Click the small plus symbol Daz Studio Formats entery on the right side of the pane to open it up

on the left side of the pane under Directory click "add" to add the location of your content on your external drive.

make sure you add the path to both Daz Studio Formats, and Poser Formats.

    hope this helps :)

  • Thanks, icecrmn. I guess I should have been more specific...

A couple of years ago, my hard drive crashed. When I got my replacement and reinstalled DS, I would try and open my old document files (which had been saved to an external drive) and DS would have trouble finding the correct files. Even though I had my Content Libraries pointing to the correct directories, I couldn't get my files to open correctly. At the time I was told that the problem was that I hadn't been able to save certain files from my crashed hard drive which DS would use to open my files. I was left with all of these document files which I would have to recreate all over again. I'm hoping I don't have to do that again this time. I backed up my document files. Microsoft has my old Windows directory renamed to Windows.old. I was hoping I could copy files into my new installation of DS so that I can chug along like I used to.

I hope this better explains my predicament. Again, thanks for any help that anyone might be able to provide.

Studio saves your customized stuff to a data folder in "c:\Users\Spinx Magoo\Documents\Daz 3D"

If that folder could not be recovered from the crashed drive I'm afraid the other helpers are correct. You will be stuck redoing them all :(

If you did manage to recover that folder you could merge it with the new one in "My Documents" and you should be ok as long as the files weren't corrupted during the hard drive crash.

  • Would that be the InstallManager folder? I found a few folders with DAZ stuff in it but I want to make sure that I copy over the correct files.

That one is just for the Install Manager. It won't have what you want.

    where are you looking?

C:\Users\shared is the wrong place :)

The user name I use for my computer is David

So therefore my custom data folder is in

    C:\Users\David\Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library

I don't know what you called yours so you will have to replace David with the name you used on your computer.

Nothing in the "c:\Users\Public" folder will have what you want. That location is used for content and install manager stuff, So Studio knows what you have and have not installed from your account and where you put it.It won't have any of the custom stuff from your user folder.

edit: I should probably note that if you overwrite your current install manager data folders with an old version you will cause a lot more problems. Please don't do anytihng with the install manager folders at all,Those won't help you get your custom changes back.
