Migrating DS 4.5 on old laptop to 4.8 on new laptop&desktop

Hi, I’m doing a major computer systems upgrade, and was wondering if anyone might have thoughts on the migration plan I’ve put together (based on information I’ve pulled from the forums.)  Sorry for the length of this post, but any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I am currently:

- using DS mostly for simple art reference, drawing from “unlit” screenshots as opposed to “lit” renderings

- running DS 4.5 and DIM on a laptop, with content files on an external drive

- have DIM 4.8 Beta and Valentina Convertor in my download archive

- in the process of upgrading my hardware with an aim to move into lighting and rendering stills with IRAY, and making some simple animations

- also an owner of iClone and Carrara

I’m moving from an old laptop, to:

  1. a new laptop (2gb VRAM) AND
  2. a new desktop (TITAN X based, currently building)
  3. possibly, a large capacity USB3 flash thumbdrive for external content.  (I have a Lexar USB3 256 GB thumbdrive that I’m considering using… would an external USB3 SSD transfer data any faster?  I’d like to hang something off my machines that’s smaller and faster, than the spinning external drive I’m currently using.)

Essentially, I’d like to setup parts of scenes while I’m out of the house, and then render them when I get home… so I’m looking for a way to manage/sync my workflow between two machines.

These are the steps that I’m thinking of take to migrate/manage a new setup:

FIRST… Write down current:

  1. Location of User Data – (my custom categories)
  2. Location of Installed Daz Content (currently on “Old_USB3_Spin”)
  3. Location of Installed Poser Content (currently on “Old_USB3_Spin”)
  4. Per above, confirm path locations for content and user data from Management Pane in DS
  5. Location of saved scenes
  6. Location of downloaded purchases (currently on “Old_USB3_Spin”) and installation Paths in DIM Settings panes
  7. Location of DIM Database Files (manifest files)
  8. Location of CMS Database Files (Valentina)

SECOND… On old laptop running DS 4.5:

  1. Export and back up User Data (Custom Categories)
  2. Backup CMS Database Files (Valentina)
  3. Install DAZ 4.8 Beta from my DIM download archive (had saved it to drive a while ago, and will install only beta, so I can leave 4.5 installed)
  4. Install PostgreSQL from my DIM download archive
  5. Install and Run Valentina to PostgreSQL convertor from DIM download archive
  6. Locate and copy PostgreSQL Database files to “New_USB3_Flash”
  7. Locate DIM Manifest files and copy to “New_USB3_Flash”
  8. Uninstall 4.8 from old laptop

THIRD… on new external flashdrive, do further content transfer

  1. Copy all installed content from “Old_USB3_Spin” to “New_USB3_Flash”
  2. Leave download purchase on “Old_USB3_Spin”

FOURTH… Setup DS 4.8 on New Laptop:

  1. Install DIM
  2. Correct DIM’s Account.ini values to reference the Manifest files on “New_USB3_Flash” (per http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/52269/move-installmanager-directory-now-no-installed-content)
  3. Set DIM download location to “Old_USB3_Spin”, installation location to “New_USB3_Flash”
  4. Install DS 4.8 from DIM and make sure its running PostgreSQL Database
  5. Replace PostgreSQL Database files with copied files from “New_USB3_Flash”
  6. Set path locations for content and user data in Management Pane to files previously copied to “New_USB3_Flash”

FIFTH… Setup DS 4.8 on New Desktop:

  1. Install DIM

ONGOING…

Sync CMS databases between Computers

  1. Before opening Daz on either computer, use GoodSync to sync CMS database files with intermediary files on “New_USB3_Flash”
  2. Export USER DATA after every installation/recategorization to home on “New_USB3_Flash”

Backups

  1. Do redundant backups of “New_USB3_Flash”
  2. Do redundant backups of local database files on each computer for safety

Again, sorry for the length of this post, but if anyone has advice I’d be greatly indebted.  Thanks!
