Iray server is now 'free', but is the overhead worth it?

Original title:Iray server is now 'free', but i can't seem to get it into cluster mode.

Don't know when it changed but siemens seems to have decided to make iray server 'free'(you're the product).

Unlike previous versions i've worked with, there's no alternative for 'cluster' mode in the shortcuts.

Everything i keep coming up with is either really out of date, or doesn't seem to work.

Any ideas?

Edit/update: Never mind.

After doing a bit of testing in stand alone mode, i'm not going to bother going forward with it.

Iray uses, on my system, ~1GB of sysram, with CMD, and ~44MB for the windows explorer instance.

My primary gpu, quadro m4000, loses 275MB(gpu-z) and my render gpu, Tesla p-40, loses 559MB(Nvidia-SMI) of Vram.

On my render server, my tesla m40's(12GB) lose 387MB on each of 4 gpus. The main gpu on that system, loses almost nothing as it's amd.

Just some food for though for people considering using this for rendering.

Let me know what you're getting on your gpus, if you don't mind.

You have to use the command line argument --cluster to start it in cluster mode. See the documentation for the required values.

I still haven't gotten the email, probably went to my junk file.

Tried the usual defaults for this kind of stuff admin/admin, and it worked.

Gotta change the password on first boot, so it's not much of a security risk.

If only it were that simple.

And the documentation bothered to include structure requirements. The multiple errors, such as file paths being wrong by default and requiring moving/copying, and showing the multiple requirements was way more helpful.

It's more like, --cluster [tcp/udp] --master-address [ip] --[bang head on table repeatedly, i hate command line]

Don't worry about it, though, the overhead just isn't worth it.

Just doing some timings now, the server has 'Iray RTX 2023.0.2, build 367100.3997, 31 Jul 2023, nt-x86-64', which I think is newer than the Beta.

The server is on the same pc, so it will be a direct comparison.

  • Is iray server still free? Can I connect to my iray server remotely ie if the server is at my house and im trying to connect from a different city or state? I have a computer with a k620 quadro and a pair of m40 teslas 24gb ones

    Still free.

As for remoting into it, can't really say yea or nay, but if your system is setup for remote access, imho, it shouldn't be a problem.
