SSS skin question

Hi.

So, I've been using Daz for a few years, but I've got a really n00b question.

When I look at characters some of them have "SSS" options which also have a percentage included (e.g. SSS Skin 25%, 50%, 75%...etc )

I have an idea that they are a shader (of some sort), but what do they do? Do they make the skin look better or something else.

I'm sorry that I'm asking such a n00bie/trivial question.

Thanks

Sub surface scattering mimics the way that light moves inside something or someone. The light that isn't bounced off your skin enters it and then bounces around a while before it loses its energy or exits again. It is one of the settings that helps most with making skin look "alive". To much though and it can look waxy or other wise wrong. How much you need can depend on things like lighting, how close or far away the figure is and of course the big one.. Personal taste.
