Genesis 8 and Genesis 9 Questions
Hello Lovelies!
Okay, so I have a couple questions. First, what is the dfference between Genesis 8 and Genesis 8.1?
Secondly, Is it possible to transfer morphs from 8 to 9? I'm really liking Genesis 9 a lot. I want to move as much stuff as possible to them and already have more characters and skin materials for 9 than I do for 8.
Apparently, I purchased some morphs for Genesis 8 at some point. These one's, in fact:

Okay, I'd really like these morphs for Genesis 9.Is there a way to go about this? Do I use 8 or 8.1? Is there a tutorial somewhere? I vaguely remember somethng about this for Genesis 1 and V4, but I don't remember how or know if it's possible to do something like this with the newer figures. Any help would be HUGELY appreciated! Thanks

I am using these to convert genesis 8 characters to genesis 9

and also I watched this video from The WP Guru
Converting Genesis 8 Character Shapes to Genesis 9
Genesis 8.1 is basically Genesis 8 with a few additions:
Core characters made for G8.1 also usually use the PBR Skin shader which was introduced with G8.1.
G8.1 can use 99% of the content made for G8 out of the box, sometimes with minor tweaks for example to take the new surfaces into account.
Regarding converting morphs from G8 to G9: it is possible as long as they're not HD morphs.
There are several products for that in the store (they use different methods):

There's also a tutorial here: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/598141/bringing-a-shape-from-g8-over-to-g9-tutorial/p1
Gensis 8.1 changed the expression system - that means the old Genesis 8 expressions and packs that call them no longer work (there is a way around this, but then you end up with a double-load of controllers for expressions). 8.1 split the Surface group for the body into two, one for the torso and one for the back of the head, to make it easier to balance resolutions but that does mean it often sues a new UV set that won't work on 8 - 8.1 does also have the 8 UVs and can use its materials, but some add-ons such as Geometry Shells adjusted by scripts may not work fully as expected due to the name changes (generally this is fairly easy to fix once you are aware of it).
Okay!! I think I understand the 8 to 8.1! Thank you very much!
But the transfers... I'm hoping for something more economically responsible! $75 is more than the morphs cost! LOL I don't have any characters purchased for 8. I apparently just bought a few morph packages, so I want to move them and their unique shapes, if possible. I found a couple of tutorials from Sickle Yield and Singular Blues for moving stuff to G8. I'm thinking it might work out??? Idk
! I FEEL LIKE A NEWBIE AGAIN! WAHHH!!!! LOL
Has anyone tried this yet? I'm so good a breaking stuff I'd like a little confirmation and/or advice before jumping in, I guess.
Wish me luck! And thank you again!
Did you check the last link in my post? It's about a tutorial to do it manually.
Disclaimer: I've not used it.
I used the video version before the ManFriday converter came out and it worked fine for me, although there were quite a few steps . I find the ManFriday converter to work great converting G8 and G8.1 morphs over to G9

It might not be of any concern depending on how and what you use Gen 9 for but eyes and eye sockets can become problematic... during the conversion eye sockets can get distorted, even more so with extreme morphs, the eyes also require a separate conversion which then need fixing in the sockets.
just things to consider if like me you favor Gen 9 particularly for the eyes (and close up renders of them).
Hey Thanks, everyone!
Yeah, I missed that Lena. Thank you for pointing it out! And thanks FSMC for confirmation that it works! WooHoo!!
And Thank you, Solitary for the heads up for the eyes! If I run into trouble can I reach out to you? LOL I do really like Genesis 9 A LOT!
OKAY!! I think I've got what I need.
Thank you again everyone! You guys ROCK!
All the above method / tools use Clones, so as long as a Clone is used, depending on your character(s), there may be distortions and rigging issues to various extent. The best way is to use Faceform Wrap but that'll cost too much, not really necessary.
As FSMC mentioned, I also found ManFriday's Converter's a better option if you want to save some time...( + Legacy UVs for Genesis 9 product from Cayman Studios).
But no matter you go for manual or automated conversion, better know to use at least one modeling / sculpting software (e.g. Blender / Hexagon), if aiming to make a much better result..
Pls feel free to let us know if there's any conversion issue. Good luck!
I tried messing with Blender years ago. Mostly to unwrap UV's so I could make my own textures for things. I did try to make a couple things. Did the donut tutorial, tried to make a guitar for Slon (Nursoda character) but gave up when I couldn't figure out how to fix some stufff, lol...but not much beyond that.
I'm always "going to" learn to model. LOL
The trouble is I get ahead of myself! I was away too long and too many advancements now have my eyes going "....ooooh SHINEEEYYY!"
I just want to play with everything ALL AT ONCE!
Today, I'm STILL installing crap (haven't even dug into my old hard drive yet) ....AND trying to learn IRAY.... AND buying MORE stuff (lol) ...AND -
...here's another hiccup... I keep thinking there must be a way to make this work in IRAY. It's the IDL Studio Light Dome thing... I'm thinking there must be a setting I need to adjust for IRAY, but so far I can't find it. I mean... It's image based lighting. That should work somehow, right?
See??? Too many things! LOL
Sorry Jasmine but i was never able to get conversions that held up to close scrutiny in the eye department so i never pursued it... there were other issues like the eye moisture not quite fitting right and eye movement in expression-making being a bit janky.
But i'm talking close-up head shots, where the eyes are very much the focal point... for everthing else, a rough and ready conversion will be perfectly adequate, but in those instances Gen 8 is more than adequate too.
Obviously there are other valid reasons for converting but for me it's horses for courses.
