whenever i apply shader presets ( in DS Default folder ) to model surface, i cant seem to import this surface material to shader mixer( File>import from scene>material) anymore? wonder if its a bug or just some extra step needed for importing modified surface.

Which shader and which version of DS?
its daz 4.8pro .... presets located at shader preset>DS default library, dzToonGlossy for example. simply create a primitive object and apply this shader will do...
I'm not sure, but I don't ever remember being able to import a compiled shader that wasn't the DS Default Surface into SM. dzToonGlossy is NOT the same shader as the default. It is a separate compiled shader.
no prob, all i wish is to import the material surface(applied with dz ToonGloosy) to SM and study the brick structure, unfortunately daz wont do that
There is no brick structure to study in a compiled shader...that's why you aren't getting anything.
A ShaderMixer brick network compiles at render time, into the default temp folder, so it is a series of individual code pieces (bricks) up until that point. A compiled shader, while in source format, was code, before it is distributed, it's compiled and is now just bytecode. And if you did get anything in ShaderMixer, it would probably be the basic surface brick (not the Default Surface) and 'macro' brick that isn't editable/viewable.
mjc thx for the detail! though , i think its still the best to have notification/alert for importing material surface with compiled shaders applied. user might forget/unintentionally apply the presets to number of surfaces but 'cant' import some into SM later ,so they can simply consider it as bug without knowing their previous unnotified action.
