IRay, Photoreal or Interactive. Explanation needed.

What's the difference between the two?

Thanks again folks.

    See for starters:

In a nutshell, Interactive is somewhat faster, but more limited in a general sense. However, in Interactive you can more precisely control shadow characteristics, so it's a plus if that feature interests you.

Be warned: nVidia characterizes both render modes as "interactive." That can be confusing. The names are really just marketing fluff, and have little bearing on the obtained output. You can get "photorealistic" results with Interactive, too.

Here's a quick write-up I did on the modes a few months back:

  • That's excellent Tobor, thanks for the article and the link.

Have you done any other articles on IRay?  I've found very little in the forums other than using HDRI's for IBL and a lot of folks repeatedly asking the same basic questions, since the search function doesn't seem to work very well.  I'm disappointed that in the many months that IRay has been available for Daz they've released no documentation.  I bought a video tutorial series from Dreamlight but was terribly disappointed.  Sickleyield's free tuts are by far the most comprehensive tutorials available but the majority of the settings still haven't been covered.  There must be real documentation somewhere.

These topics have been covered pretty well in the forum. While the forum search isn't very good, you can use a directed Google or Bing search into the daz3d site of the setting you want to know more about. Example:

    site:daz3d.com maxpathlength

This limits the search to just those topics found on this site, including the forums.

That said, for the most part, you don't usually need to change those settings. For average/typical renders, you won't get better results if you change these. The defaults were set up to provide good results based on typical scene types.

  • As a professional (I pay my mortgage with the money I make doing this stuff) I don't do typical/average work and I need to know what stuff does.  While I'm quite familiar with using external search engines (Google or DuckDuckGo), they take me to the thread's first page, NOT the actual post and I simply have no time to wade through 50 pages of posts looking for the explanation of the setting's function...if that's what it is.  More likely the setting has just been mentioned vice an actual explanation.
Considering the frequency with which I see the same questions asked over and over, others must be having the same problem.   I greatly appreciated the tutorial by Sickleyield on IRay surfaces AND it's attendant link to Daz's documentation and had hoped that there was something like this for IRay itself.  I'd hate to have to go back to Poser as it's never been particularly stable for me, but the thorough and comprehensive documentation may push be back to the dark side.

As a pro have you not hooked up with the Nvidia forums / support? Iray, Vray, Mental Ray? Tobor's link to Nvidia ARC has further links for Technical Docs.

There is no "real" documentation for this. Daz is not known for providing good docs, and they rely (too much) on its users to fill in the gaps in these forums. I appreciate your not wanting to wade through 50 pages to find the information you want, but this is what we all have to do.
